Join the entire Hofstra University Community for a full day of activities to protect the environment, promote sustainability, and prepare for a greener future.
Tuesday, April 22
| 9:00-10:00am Arboretum Tour with Fred Soviero, Director of Hofstra's Arboretum. Meet at the Hofstra Labyrinth near CV Starr. Tour will end at Hofstra Hall. Tour the beautiful campus arboretum and find out about the history of the arboretum and learn about the unique plants that grow on our campus. |
| 10:00-11:00am Campus Sustainability Tour with Terry Greis, Campus Sustainability Officer. Meet in front of Hofstra Hall. Ever wonder whether or not Hofstra is a green campus? Find out on this campus sustainability tour. The tour will end at the student garden at 11:00am so participants can take part in the Hofstra student garden planting. |
| 11:15am - Noon Garden Planting with Hofstra's Sustainability Club. The Sustainability Studies Club will be holding an Earth Day gardening event at the student garden located to the south of Stuyvesant Residence Hall. All are welcome to come help plant and learn about the Hofstra Student Gardens. Anyone who has been raising plants on their own is encouraged to come plant them in the garden so they can grow to their full potential. |
| 11:10am – 12:35pm What Does "350" Mean to You? Building a Global Climate Movement 101 The number 350 means climate safety: to preserve a livable planet, scientists say we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350 ppm. The organization 350.org is working to build a global grassroots movement to hold elected officials accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice. Much of the movement is sprouting up on college campuses across the country. In this session, we will hear from a panel of students and environmental justice activists, discussing everything from the Keystone XL Pipeline Project to hydro-fracking's impact on local communities. | 12:45pm to 2:10pm Investing in a Greener Future An informative workshop on socially-responsible investing, featuring a how-to power-point presentation by financial specialist Ronald Blaylock, the Founder and Managing Partner of GenNx360 Capital Partners. He has held senior management positions at UBS, PaineWebber Group, and Citicorp. Join Students for a Greener Hofstra and CCE as he gives us insights into how and why it is time to divest in fossil fuels, while investing in Greener options for our future.
