Spelling Bee Champions
2018 Bee
Ryan Himmelsbach, an 8th grader at Paul J Gelinas Junior High School in East Setauket held onto his championship title at the 7th annual Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday, February 11, at The Helene Fortunoff Theater. Ryan’s winning word was “teleost.” Other words he spelled correctly in the final rounds were “chevalet” and “apoptosis”. The Bee went 10 rounds and a little over two hours before Ryan was left as the sole speller on stage. Ryan, who also won in 2017, represented Long Island at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, MD, May 27-June 1, 2018.

Rika Mizoguchi won the Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee held on Sunday, March 13, 2016. Rika is an eighth grader at HB Thompson Middle School in Syosset, NY. Rika's winning word was "adnate". The competition began with 128 fourth through eighth grade students from schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
2015 Bee
Sahil Sangwan won the Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee held on Sunday, February 8, 2015. Sahil is an eighth grader at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School in East Setauket, NY. Sahil’s winning word was “Afrikaans.” Prior words he answered correctly were “baineotherapy” and “sagittal”. This competition began with more than 115 fourth through eighth grade students from schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
2014 Bee
Jhanvi took first place in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee held on February 9, 2014. She is an eighth-grader at Great Hollow Middle School in Nesconset, NY. Her winning word was “rorqual,” a type of whale. Prior words she answered correctly were “kakistocracy” and “verdigris.” This year’s competition began with over 105 fourth- through eighth-grade students from schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
2013 Bee
Isabelle Scott, an eighth grader at Paul J. Gelinas Middle School in Setauket, NY, was the champion of the second Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee held on Sunday, February 24, 2013. Isabelle’s winning word was “abatement” previously correctly spelling were “embroider,” “decongestant,” and “dubiously.”
2012 Bee
Dean Creedon, a fifth grader at Oaks Street School 3 in the Oceanside, NY, school district, was the champion of the first Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse on March 18, 2012.Creedon’s winning word was “mordacious.” Prior words he answered were “temerity,” “stratification,” and “heliosis.”
