Residence Life Employment

Each residential complex is supervised by a Resident Director or Graduate Resident Director. Our resident directors are a dynamic group of live-in professionals who are responsible for the overall management of their assigned residence hall complex. The resident directors oversee a staff of undergraduate resident assistants, coordinate necessary maintenance within the facility, and assist in the facilitation of social and educational programs that take place within the residence halls. They are readily available to assist residents with roommate, personal, social, emotional, and academic concerns. Our resident directors are trained in crisis/emergency response and work collaboratively with the Department of Public Safety to address emergencies that take place after regular business hours.

We also have Resident Assistants (RA) who live and work on each floor of our residence halls. The RA position is an integral role within our department that fosters healthy communication and promotes a sense of belonging within their residence hall and across campus. The RA position is a competitive position for full-time students who embody the PRIDE principles – Personal and Social Responsibility, Respect for Self and Others, Integrity, Ethics and Leadership, Diversity and Community, and Expression and Free Exchange. Resident Assistants exercise creativity, responsibility, and care for their position and the Hofstra community at large. They are able to help students with tasks as small as navigating the campus or advising the use of campus resources and more pressing issues ranging from roommate mediations to emergency situations. Resident Assistants report directly to their supervising resident director and have the support of the resident director on duty and the Department of Public Safety for emergency situations.

Are you interested in becoming an RA?

We invite all students to consider serving as an RA, as it’s one of the most meaningful leadership opportunities on campus. Students that are interested can increase their likelihood of being selected during the RA application process by engaging in various campus leadership opportunities like membership in the Residence Halls Association, membership in any other campus group, and participating in activities and events that hone their leadership qualities (Time Management, Positivity, Good Communication Skills, Mindfulness, Acceptance, etc.)

Can commuter students apply for this position?

Absolutely! We welcome applications from commuting students!

What is the application process?

Applications for the RA position go live on the Hofstra Portal during winter break. The applications typically close during the first week of classes. Applicants must pass a check with the Office of Community Standards and must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (Graduate-level RA applicants must have a 3.0). Applicants meeting these standards will be invited to participate in a 30-minute individual interview with one to two members of the Residence Life staff. If chosen to progress, candidates will be invited to Group Process Day where they will be paired with other applicants, given the opportunity to work together, and show us their leadership potential.
