HONORS SEMINAR: PILGRIMAGE TO INDIA

Fall Semester 2020, with travel to India from Jan.2-24, 2021

Program Details:

Hofstra University Honors College is offering a Fall 2020 Honors Seminar for a select group of HUHC students who want to learn about the religious diversity of India and the significance of pilgrimage within the country’s different religions.

Students will enroll in a 3-credit course (HUHC 020) course, taught by Dr. Sophie Hawkins in the Department of Religion.  The class will meet on campus for six classes during the Fall 2020 semester, and then travel to India for a two-to-three week pilgrimage in January 2021. 

Highlights:

  • Fall semester 3-credit HUHC Seminar, with classroom preparation for a study abroad experience. Classes meet on alternate Tuesdays from 6-9 pm.  Travel dates to India include options for two-or-three week stays from January 2-24, 2021.  
  • Learn about the long history of religious pluralism and the intersections of politics and religion in contemporary India
  • Visit active centers of worship from Muslim, Hindu, Sufi, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Zoroastrian and Jewish traditions
  • Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites of architectural and religious significance dating from the 6th – 14th centuries
  • Reflect upon the difference between pilgrimage, tourism, and journeys of migration
  • Hike in the Coorg mountains, bathe elephants, and catch the latest Bollywood blockbusters

Program Costs:

There will be a program fee of approximately *$2,750 for three weeks of travel to India, which covers airfare, accommodation, most meals, visits to local attractions/activities, and insurance.  For students opting for a two-week stay, the cost will be somewhat lower.  If you are not taking more than the allowed 17 credits in the Fall semester, there will be no additional tuition charges beyond the regular Fall tuition and fees. 

Spaces in this course are strictly limited and allotted on a first-come first-served basis. 

A $500 refundable deposit is required to reserve your space in this class.
