Facilities and Operations educates building occupants and visitors about the green features of the School of Medicine expansion project and developed a green education program and public outreach programs to identify and highlight the green features of the building. Visit the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell facilities here.

Saving Plastic and Drinking Water

Hofstra saves plastic water bottles with over 100 bottle filling locations (Hydration Stations) around the campus. Visit the interactive Hofstra map and view the station locations under Services.

Lighting Upgrades and Savings

For every replacement of a flood light to LED, Hofstra uses 1/3 of the wattage, the bulb will last 10 times longer and up to five years without a change. The savings and rebates are used to purchase and install more lightbulbs each year.

Room Occupancy Sensors

Occupancy sensors control the use of electricity for unoccupied spaces to provide more savings.

Saving Energy with Air Conditioning and Window Replacement

Increased energy efficiency in classroom buildings and residence halls campus wide, with upgrades or replacements of heating, air conditioning and windows.

New! Reduce Reuse Recycle

Organizations such as Students for a Greener Hofstra, the Center for Civic Engagement, Hofstra's Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter and others lead by example and giving Hofstra students an opportunity to create sustainability awareness. Hofstra Dining Services sponsors farmers markets with fresh produce and a "plate first" policy to limit plastic usage. Hydration stations provide clean water for your refillable bottle and are available throughout the campus. Hofstra shuttle buses provide free transportation both on and off campus. Lighting upgrades as well as window and roof replacements are ongoing throughout the campus.  Recycle stations are being added to locations throughout the campus.  Call us at (516) 463-6619 with your suggestions and comments, or email us at sustainability[at]hofstra.edu.

Environmental Protection Agency and Green Energy Purchases

Hofstra University is now purchasing 30,000 megawatt-hours (mWh) of green power annually, enough to meet 50 percent of the university's electricity use. Learn more about Green Power here.
