Saving Plastic and Drinking Water
Hofstra saves plastic water bottles with over 100 bottle filling locations (Hydration Stations) around the campus. Click here to visit the campus interactive map and view the station locations under Services.
Lighting Upgrades and Savings
For every replacement of a flood light to LED, Hofstra uses 1/3 of the wattage, the bulb will last 10 times longer and up to five years without a change. The savings and rebates are used to purchase and install more lightbulbs each year.
Room Occupancy Sensors
Occupancy sensors control the use of electricity for unoccupied spaces to provide more savings.
Saving Energy with Air Conditioning and Window Replacement
Increased energy efficiency in classroom buildings and residence halls campus wide, with upgrades or replacements of heating, air conditioning and windows.
New! Reduce Reuse Recycle
Organizations such as Students for a Greener Hofstra, the Center for Civic Engagement, Hofstra's Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter and others lead by example and giving Hofstra students an opportunity to create sustainability awareness. Hofstra Dining Services sponsors farmers markets with fresh produce and a "plate first" policy to limit plastic usage. Styrofoam use has been banned in all food service locations. Hydration stations provide clean water for your refillable bottle and are available throughout the campus. Hofstra shuttle buses provide free transportation both on and off campus. Lighting upgrades as well as window and roof replacements are ongoing throughout the campus. Recycle stations are being added to locations throughout the campus. Environmental Protection Agency and Green Energy Purchases
Hofstra University is now purchasing 6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, enough to meet 30 percent of the university's electricity use. Learn more about Green Power here.
Green Move Out
Hofstra University works with local organizations including Island Harvest and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island during student move out in the Spring each year. In 2018 a total of 2,502 pounds of food was collected. Big Brothers Big Sisters report receiving 6,584 pounds of donations during the two week move out period.
