Session 1: June 28 - July 9
Session 2: July 12 - July 23
Session 3: July 26 - August 6
Are you ready to become a Mad Scientist? The Science Discovery Lab specialty is just the place for you!
The Science Discovery Lab program is for the camper who seeks scientific adventure beyond the typical school curriculum. A certified teacher leads the campers in hands-on, guided activities that will allow them to see, touch, hear, smell and taste how fun science can truly be.
The program covers various areas of science, such as biology, chemistry, physics, rocketry, nutrition and aerospace. During the two-week session, campers transform into young scientists as they engage in myriad experiments, such as dissections ranging from frogs to fetal pigs to sharks. All campers will design, construct and launch their own rocket on our famous Launch Day, and counselors will also teach about chemical bonds. With tie-dye, goo and polymer worms to take home, many of our activities will enhance campers’ understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Through the use of the most current technology at Hofstra’s state-of-the-art science laboratories, participants will undergo a journey that covers much of the scientific spectrum with souvenirs to capture these memories from the very experiments themselves! This specialty is designed to hold the interest of enthusiastic “scientists” as well as campers who wish to test their potential in these exploratory subjects. Each year, different course material – with progressively more challenging investigation skills – is introduced.
In this two-week specialty, campers will explore various marine organisms, such as algae, seaweeds, cnidarians, mollusks, porifera, echinoderms, osteichthyes, chondrichthyes, and cetaceans.
Campers will create and maintain a saltwater aquarium and learn about various marine environments. Each day campers will explore a different type of organism and learn how to maintain a saltwater aquarium. Hands-on dissections, off-site field trips, and guest speakers will diversify this program and inspire campers to delve into marine biology.
In this course you will investigate your family health history, you will manipulate genes, you will learn the foundations of biotechnology, and most importantly you will learn about you!
Genetics helps explain a lot of things, like what makes you unique, why you look like other members of your family, and why some diseases run in your family. Taking time to learn about genetics can help you understand your own health and make healthy choices. Genes that do not work correctly can cause problems.
A group of rare diseases are caused when a single gene stops working normally. Many more common diseases come from multiple genes that do not work correctly and the combination of these genes with the environment, such as your lifestyle and habits. The more you know, the easier it is to make the right decisions.
Schedule: Half the day consists of program instruction. For the other half of the day, campers are placed in a recreation group where they enjoy lunch, instructional swim and recreational sports.
