Experiential Learning Programs

Students can enhance their education through hands-on programs that connect learning with real-world experience. Entrepreneurial competitions and high-energy makeathons and hackathons further encourage innovation, collaboration, and practical problem-solving across engineering and computer science disciplines.

DEPTH Program

The DEPTH program ensures Hofstra engineering students graduate with real-world experience. All students complete at least one approved professional activity, such as an internship, co-op, faculty research, summer research program, competition, or relevant employment or service. These hands-on experiences help students build skills, explore career paths, and prepare for the workforce, with successful completion formally recognized on the academic transcript.

Organizations and Affiliations

Hofstra engineering students can complement their studies through active professional organizations that support hands-on learning, leadership, and networking. Key groups include American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) which connect students to national communities, career resources, and peer collaboration.

Engineering Labs

The Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science has completed a major renovation of its academic facilities, bringing new technologies, machinery, and equipment into classrooms and laboratories. These resources are accessible to trained undergraduate engineering and computer science students and support hands-on learning across disciplines. With a strong focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, facilities such as the 3D printing lab enable students to prototype ideas and experiment with projects early in their academic careers.

Tutoring Center

The Department of Engineering runs an in-person tutoring center in Room 100 Adams Hall. No appointment is necessary. Just stop by with your textbook and/or homework, and ask your questions as they arise.

Students majoring in the programs offered by the Engineering Department often pursue internship opportunities.
