AMSA (American Medical Student Association)

AMSA is an organization for pre-med students.

AMSA (previously as APHOS, the Association of Pre-health Oriented Students) sponsors a number of activities every semester that are intended to provide students interested in medically related fields to prepare for their future careers. During the biweekly meeting, AMSA typically hosts one or more speakers who offer valuable information about medical careers, MCAT strategies, medical school admission applications, personal statements, and the interview process.

The club also sponsors or participates in several charity and volunteer events (in the past, members have participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-Mile Walk, the Walk to Cure Diabetes, and a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation). The AMSA officers have several new ideas for this year, and we encourage our members to make more suggestions through the bulletin board on the Pre-Med Students' Blackboard site.

Honor Societies

The Alpha Lambda chapter of Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is the Biology Honor Society at Hofstra University. The group strives to have at least one event each semester to raise money for important biology-related causes as well as to foster community in Hofstra’s Biology Department. Recent events have included Pie a Professor and βalloon βursts for βeta to raise money for Relay for Life and to provide supplies for the Tomas de Berlanga School, an underserved school in Galápagos, Ecuador. The group also invites and hosts a seminar speaker for the Biology Department Seminar Series each academic year. You can follow their activities on their Hofstra TriBeta Instagram.

New members are inducted in the spring semester each academic year. Induction is by invitation only and requires a student have a 3.4 GPA in all biology courses, a 3.0 overall GPA, and at least three Biology courses completed at Hofstra. For more information, please contact faculty advisor, Dr. Michael Dores (Michael.R.Dores@hofstra.edu).
