The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication Donor Funded Scholarships

Hofstra University’s Donor Scholarship Program provides tremendous opportunities and financial assistance to deserving Hofstra students.  Through endowed or annual named scholarships, donors help meet the needs of individual students.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for all Herbert School scholarships.  Unless noted as a one-time award, donor-funded scholarships may be renewed for subsequent years if the recipients continue to meet the criteria.

Most donor funded endowed scholarships underwrite all or a portion a recipient’s current award from Hofstra University.  Undergraduate students who have been accepted to or are enrolled in the Herbert School and who meet the scholarship criteria will be considered for the following endowed scholarships:

Chris Albrecht Endowed Scholarship

  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement in major and/or economic need

Dean Anthony Endowed Memorial Scholarship

  • RTVF major who has a genuine interest in radio broadcasting
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement in major and financial need

Patricia A. Dyon Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Broadcast Journalism

  • Journalism major
  • Preference given to a student with an interest in broadcast journalism
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major and financial need

HBO Endowed Scholarship in Film or Television

  • Film or television major from an ethnic, cultural or national background that adds diversity to the student population in the Herbert School
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major and financial need

Madeline Kahn Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Film or Television

  • Film or television major
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement in major and financial need

The Honorable Arthur Wellesley Thompson Endowed Memorial Scholarship

  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major and financial need
  • First preference is for a Freeport resident, but may be awarded to any Long Island resident

Van Peebles Endowed Scholarship for Film Studies

  • Film Studies and Production major
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement and/or financial need

Patricia Koster Zarb Endowed Scholarship in Journalism

  • Journalism major committed to fair and unbiased reporting
  • Demonstrated academic achievement and financial need
  • Preference given to a rising sophomore

The following scholarships are awarded in addition to existing financial aid:

Annual scholarships and select endowed scholarships provide modest tuition remission in addition to existing Hofstra financial aid.  Unless otherwise noted, these scholarships are awarded to rising juniors and seniors.

Herbert School majors who would like to be considered for the following scholarships may apply here.  Some scholarships require a special application (see below for Kolb, Alumni, Zimmerman).  Students must have a FAFSA on file.  The annual application deadline is May 31 for scholarships that will be awarded by September of the upcoming academic year.  Since scholarships may be renewed from subsequent years, not all of these scholarships will be available every year.

Marvin I. Bernstein Endowed Scholarship in Communication Arts

  • Journalism major
  • Preference given to a student with an interest in sports journalism
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major and financial need

Robert W. Greene - Press Club of Long Island Annual Scholarship

  • Journalism major
  • Demonstrated academic achievement
  • Preference given to a student with an interest in investigative journalism

Herbert School of Communication Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship
Contact Dean Marlowe for special application

  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major
  • Participation in school clubs/organizations

Max Benjamin Kolb Scholarship
Contact Prof. Katzman to be considered

  • Junior and Senior Film majors
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement and talent in major and/or financial need
  • One time award, not renewable

John L. Kominicki Memorial Annual Scholarship (2018-19 and 2019-20)

  • Established in loving memory of John L. Kominicki, a veteran journalist widely recognized as a force for innovation and a champion of the hard-boiled work ethic of classic journalism.
  • Journalism Major
  • Junior, Senior, or graduate student selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need
  • Awarded beginning in the 2018-19 academic year; may be renewed one time provided that the student remains eligible

Robert Licata Annual Scholarship

  • Journalism major
  • Preference given to a student with an interest in broadcast journalism
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement in major and/or financial need

Newsday Endowed Scholarship in Journalism

  • Journalism major
  • Demonstrated academic achievement and financial need

Joel Oliansky’59 Annual Scholarship (2018-19)

  • Lawrence Herbert School of Communication major with a demonstrated interest in and/or passion for playwriting
  • Academic achievement or potential
  • Recommendation from the Chair of the Department of Radio, Television, Film
  • One-time, nonrenewable award

Ann Parry Multimedia Journalism Endowed Scholarship

  • Student studying photojournalism, multimedia journalism, or a related major
  • Demonstrated academic achievement or potential, as well as an interest in civic engagement

The Francis Frost Wood Endowed Memorial Scholarship and Internship

  • Public Relations major
  • Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major
  • Student will intern at Newsday or a Long Island nonprofit agency

Zimmerman/Edelson Inc. Annual Scholarship
Contact Dean Marlowe for special application

  • Undergraduate and graduate students considering a career in public relations
  • Rising juniors and seniors, or students who have completed at least one semester at the graduate level
  • Demonstrated academic achievement or potential, interest in the area of public relations, and intent to pursue a career in public relations
  • Recipient will have the opportunity to participate in the Zimmerman/Edelson Inc. internship program
  • One time award, not renewable
