Mission Statement
The mission of Health and Physical Education programs at Hofstra is to prepare scholarly and highly skilled practitioners who have current knowledge and resources to identify and meet the present and future needs of their constituents. These programs embrace the mission of the School of Education - to prepare scholar-practitioners committed to theory-informed practice in diverse settings with populations from a variety of social and cultural contexts and dedicated to furthering social justice and democratic processes.
The curricula are designed to develop mastery of subject matter knowledge in a collaborative learning environment with an awareness of the uses of technological advances as they exist in each discipline. They are also designed to provide opportunities for the integration of theory and practice through theory-informed, experiential and cooperative learning opportunities.
At the undergraduate level, the foundation of the initial professional preparation programs reflect the mission of the University, to provide all students with an education that is grounded in the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. This educational foundation in the liberal arts provides exposure to various modes of inquiry and forms of knowledge. At the graduate level, the professional preparation programs encourage a commitment to the ongoing learning process and provide a framework for the development of scholarship and reflective inquiry.
