From Blackouts to Windmills

Facing Suburban Energy Issues

The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®, the Hofstra University Library and the Long Island Studies Institute presented an all-day symposium, directed by Daniel Rubey, Dean of Library and Information Services, and Richard Guardino, Executive Dean of The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®, titled "From Blackouts to Windmills: Facing Suburban Energy Issues" on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Scott Skodnek Business Development Center. Speakers and panelists discussed deregulation and the municipalization of utilities, LIPA, siting and environmental issues, alternative energy sources and new technologies. Highlights included:

• ENERGY PRODUCERS, featuring panelists Robert B. Catell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, KeySpan Corporation, and Richard Kessel, Chairman, Long Island Power Authority.
• ENERGY CONSUMERS, featuring Moderator Drew Scott, Long Island Senior Correspondent and Anchor, News 12; Panelists Gordian J. Raacke, Executive Director, Renewable Energy Long Island; Ashok Gupta, Director, Air and Energy Program, Natural Resources Defense Council; and Lisa Tyson, Director, Long Island Progressive Coalition.
• KEYNOTE SPEAKER Arthur J. O'Donnell, journalist and author: Soul of the Grid: A Cultural Biography of the California Independent System Operator (New York: iUniverse, 2003).
• NEW TECHNOLOGIES and ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES, featuring Moderator A.J. Carter, Associate Editor for Business, Newsday; William C. Horak, Chairman, Energy Sciences and Technology Department, Brookhaven National Lab; Rodney B. Finzel, Associate Professor and Chair, Chemistry Department, Hofstra University; and Mark Dougherty, Clean Energy Project Manager, Long Island Power Authority.
• ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES and GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, featuring Moderator Margaret A. Hunter, Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering, Hofstra University; The Honorable James Bennett, Commissioner, New York State Public Service Commission; and Ronald Masters, Commissioner, Department of Conservation and Waterways, Town of Hempstead.
