Degrees & Programs

As a labor studies student, you will obtain a perspective on the world of work from a variety of disciplines. You may choose to learn more about employment and pay inequality, job migration, political economy, and other important issues of workplace democracy, justice, and dignity. Perhaps you will delve more deeply into the psychological, sociological, and motivational aspects of work to prepare yourself for success in a corporate environment or immerse yourself in the legal aspects of employment as a precursor to work with labor unions or a career in labor law. Where you finally concentrate your studies is entirely up to you.

Student Research

The Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy gives students hands-on experience through faculty-led research, surveys, and event coordination for lectures and conferences with leading experts. Students may also publish short research papers or book reviews in the long-running Regional Labor Review, a rare and valuable opportunity for undergraduates.

Campus Organizations and Activities

Join Hofstra’s Economics Association, the Center for Civic Engagement, or other service organizations to expand your knowledge, build networks, and form lifelong friendships. Labor studies also hosts annual events such as Equal Pay Day and Mayday at the Movies, along with frequent guest speakers and lectures, often presented in collaboration with the Hofstra Cultural Center.

Internships

Approximately 75% of Hofstra students complete internships with local and regional businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.
