In addition to fulfilling educational studies, the New York State Education Department requires that all prospective teachers being recommended for certification through a teacher education program receive instruction in:

Fire and Arson Prevention – offered online
Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment – offered online
School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) – offered online
Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Abuse (Substance Abuse) – offered online
Highway and School Safety/Prevention of Child Abduction – offered online
Harassment/Bullying Seminar (as required under the Dignity for All Students Act – DASA) – offered in-person only

Students who are in Inclusive, Special Education, Speech Language Pathology, and School Leadership programs are also required to complete training in autism, in addition to the seminars listed above.
Students in these programs will receive autism training as part of their required coursework, Hofstra University does not offer a separate seminar in autism. The following courses that cover training in autism are: SPED 248 or SPED 294 for students in Special Education programs, SPCH 241 for students in the Speech and Language Pathology program, and internship for students in the School Leadership program.

*Please note, students in the MSED Literacy Studies and Special Education program will not meet the required training in autism during their coursework. Students in the MSED Literacy Studies and Special Education program must speak with their advisor to discuss the appropriate way to complete the autism requirement. 
 
No degree is conferred for teacher education, school counseling, speech and language disabilities, school psychology or school leadership candidates without the completion of all these requirements.
