From First-Gen to Deloitte: A Journey of Mentoring and Momentum

Matthew Mandolese ’25 arrived at Hofstra University as a first-generation college student with a strong desire to succeed – and he’s leaving with a full-time job offer from Deloitte and a deep network of people who helped him get there.

A member of the Accounting and Tax Societies and vice president of outreach for Hofstra’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, Mandolese credits the Frank G. Zarb School of Business for preparing him exceptionally well for the CPA exam and the demands of the profession. “Hofstra’s accounting program places a strong emphasis on digital accounting technologies like Excel, Tableau, and Alteryx,” he said. “They were also one of the first programs to restructure their curriculum in response to changes in the CPA exam, which showed me they were truly invested in student success.”

Mandolese’s journey was shaped by mentors who helped him navigate college life and career goals. He was paired with Russ Smith, director, Office of First-Generation Support and Engagement, through the First Gen Mentor-Mentee Program.

“Russ made sure I had the tools and encouragement I needed, and he’s always had an open-door policy,” Mandolese said. He also found guidance from Imani Brown, adjunct assistant professor of accounting and administrator for accounting, accreditation, and assessment. “Professor Brown was the first person I met in the program. She helped tailor my course schedule and supported me through the CPA exam process. My experience wouldn’t be the same without her.”

Mandolese interned for over a year at Frankel Loughran Starr & Vallone, LLP, gaining experience in tax compliance and consulting. That internship, made possible through his involvement in Beta Alpha Psi, reinforced his decision to pursue tax consulting and helped him land a position with Deloitte’s Hedge Fund team.

As he reflects on his time at Hofstra, it’s the people and the camaraderie that stand out most. “Whether it was traveling with Beta Alpha Psi or spending time with friends and faculty, those are memories I’ll carry with me,” he said. “The community at Hofstra is something truly special.”
