ART TRAVELERS THROUGH TIME: LITERACY AND HISTORY THROUGH ART

Art Travelers through Time: Literacy and History through Art (Art Travelers), a nationally recognized program, provides elementary school students and teachers the opportunity to connect their classroom study of “Communities around the World” to the study of authentic cultural objects from the Museum’s large and diverse collections. These artifacts, and the experience of reading them closely, engage students in the discovery and creative thinking processes, supporting the development of essential 21st century skills and reinforcing classroom learning.

Participating school districts have included Baldwin, Freeport, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, Uniondale, Westbury, along with the Long Island School for the Gifted (South Huntington) and Trinity Lutheran School (Hicksville).

The program is generously funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, the Long Island Community Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The program, correlating to the New York State Learning Standards in the Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Language Arts, was developed collaboratively with museum and classroom educators. Tied to the third grade curriculum, it engages students and teachers in the discovery process of learning through objects.  In-gallery museum experiences are complemented by the museum educators visiting the schools before and after the Museum trip.
