As a part of Hofstra's Peer Alliance mentor initiative, new international students may request to be assigned a Global Mentor to guide them through their cultural transition at Hofstra University. Global Mentors are current students who have gone through an intensive selection process to fulfill this volunteer role. Each Global Mentor provides pre-arrival communication to a group of students, helps with international student orientation and arrival services, and provides support to new international students throughout their first semester. Global Mentors act as intercultural liaisons to new international students to aid them with their adjustment to life at Hofstra and in the U.S.

If you are a new international student, your Global Mentor will be in contact with you via email as you prepare to travel to Hofstra University. Their job is to remind you of what you need before you get here and answer any questions you may have about Hofstra student life, including student activities and residence life, and to offer advice on navigating cultural adjustment. They also will provide you with information about different on- and off-campus events throughout the semester that you can attend together. They will be there for whatever you need throughout the semester.

If you are a new international student and you have not heard from your Global Mentor within 2 weeks of your request, please email international@hofstra.edu.

Apply to Be a Global Mentor

Each year, International Enrollment recruits current Hofstra students to be a part of our Global Mentor team. Global Mentors guide our new international students through their cultural transition at Hofstra University. Each Global Mentor provides pre-arrival communication to a group of students, helps with international student orientation and arrival services, and provides support to new international students throughout their first semester.

Who should apply?

All current Hofstra students, both international and domestic, are encouraged to apply.

Why become a mentor?

Global Mentors gain leadership skills, participate in valuable training experiences, and have the opportunity to connect with people from around the world while acting as intercultural liaisons to aid new international students with their adjustment to life in the U.S.

Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year will open in February 2025!

For more information, please call 516-463-6796 or email international@hofstra.edu.
