MS in Physician Assistant Studies

Tustin, CA

What made you pursue a career as a physician assistant?
I wanted to go into a field where I could merge my interest in science with my passion for helping others. Going into healthcare felt like the perfect blend for this. I decided to become a PA specifically because I felt like I could make an impact on patient lives while doing something that’s very hands-on. I was also drawn to the flexibility of the career, in the sense that I could easily switch specialties as a PA if I wanted to.

What opportunities and extracurricular activities did you take advantage of during the PA program?
I was fortunate to hold the role of president of our PA class, as well as president of the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (SAAAPA), Hofstra chapter. These positions really helped me understand the history behind our profession and allowed me to better advocate for all PAs.

Tell us about your clinical and research experiences during the professional phase of the program.
One of my favorite parts of the program was the clinical year. We had six core clinical rotations as well as one elective rotation, which I decided to do in cardiothoracic surgery. I loved being able to get so many varied hands-on experiences, all the way from delivering babies or performing laceration repairs to assisting in surgeries.

Did you find mentors among any of the faculty here?
Each and every faculty member truly helped shape me as a PA. They all had an open-door policy, and I found myself leaning on them for advice, support, and encouragement throughout the entire program. Even the administrative staff was so positive and helpful. I could not have made it through PA school without all the amazing faculty and staff at Hofstra.

Tell us about your current employment.
I am currently working as a Neurosurgery PA in Seattle, WA. I first-assist in OR, manage the inpatient floor, and see post-operative patients in the outpatient clinic. It is a very interesting and challenging field, and I’ve loved it so far!

What advice would you give to others considering attending Hofstra University?
I have nothing but good things to say about my experience at Hofstra University. If you are looking for an organized PA program with supportive and seasoned faculty, this is definitely the place for you. Hofstra PA students definitely stand out from other students on clinical rotations because of their depth of knowledge and clinical competence. I felt very well-prepared after graduation.

What was your favorite part of the Physician Assistant Studies program?
Apart from clinical yearone of my favorite parts of our program was attending the cadaver labs at Hofstra’s medical school. I enjoyed being able to learn about different medical conditions and pathologies, and then see how they can directly affect the human body. For example, we would learn about cirrhosis and then get to see a dissected liver that is grossly enlarged and scarred, likely due to cirrhosis.
