About the Office

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the University.

The Provost is responsible for the smooth operation of the academic units of the University including all of the University's Schools and Colleges as well as the libraries of the University, with the exception of the medical school which reports directly to the president’s office.  The Provost also chairs the University Senate, which is the major University shared governance organization.

Dr. Herman A. Berliner, PhD

Dr. Herman A. Berliner, Hofstra University’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs first become provost in 1989 and served in that position until July 2015. He has returned to the Provost position effective January 1, 2019. The provost and senior vice president for academic affairs is second in command to the president at the University. In that role, Dr. Berliner was responsible for all the Colleges, Schools and academic programs of the University, as well as the Libraries, the Hofstra Museum, and the Saltzman Community Services Center.
