About Us

EdTech provides leadership and expertise in the use of innovative learning tools, instructional techniques, and course design to support faculty in teaching, learning, research, and scholarship. EdTech partners with faculty to develop and sustain campus conversations based on national and international higher education innovations and research-based practices.

EdTech supports faculty by:

  • Consulting on the adoption of instructional technology or research-related tools;

  • Providing opportunities to learn about current and emerging instructional technologies through workshops and individual consultations;

  • Collaborating on the development of fully online courses and other forms of instructional artifacts; and

  • Coordinating on the design of specialized facilities, support services, and other resources to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

Online Teaching Workshops

Online Teaching Workshop (Distance Learning Training)

The Online Teaching Workshop is a fully asynchronous online course in Canvas that offers guides for developing and facilitating online courses. Over the course of five modules, participants will learn about best practices for structuring online courses, share techniques for teaching, and discover the robust tools available for teaching online, remote, or hybrid courses. Although there are no live sessions (as is the case in any asynchronous course), the course facilitators are available to each participant through virtual office hours and by appointment to work through questions and offer additional help as needed.

The entire course takes approximately five hours to complete on your own. Each module includes an individual assignment based on your own teaching and a discussion activity that allows you to connect with your peers across the University.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the course is credit-bearing, email provost@hofstra.edu with the course name, number, who needs to be added and the reason(s) why. Once approved by the Provost Office, e-mail help@hofstra.edu with your approval confirmation and the faculty member will be added as soon as possible. See below for role descriptions in Canvas:

  • Co-Teacher - These users have the same access as a single faculty member.

  • Observer - These users are able to view content but cannot make changes to the course, view or edit grades.

Peer Teachers or Teaching Assistants can be added to the LMS site used for a course, however, this requires approval from the Provost's Office. If the course is credit-bearing, email provost@hofstra.edu with the course name, number, who needs to be added, the role the Peer Teacher or TA should be designated in the course(s), and the reason(s) why. See below for role descriptions in Canvas:

  • Peer Teacher - These users support the teacher role. They are able to communicate with students, upload content and organize materials in Canvas as directed by the faculty. They are not able to view or enter grades.

  • Teaching Assistant (TA) - Limited to graduate students only. The TA role is meant to support the teacher role. They are able to communicate with students, upload content and organize materials in Canvas as directed by the faculty. These users are able to view and enter grades.

Once approved by the Provost Office, e-mail help@hofstra.edu  with (1) your approval confirmation, (2) the student's information, and (3) which course/courses they need to be added to and the role. Requests will be fulfilled within three business days.

Students are automatically populated in your course sites based on their enrollment through Banner. Students who enroll late will be automatically added to the course sites. Course site student enrollments are updated multiple times throughout the day.

Cross-listing affects faculty load reports, so approval is needed from either a chair or dean. If they approve, they can email registrar@hofstra.edu with the course details (name and course ID) and request the courses be cross-listed. Once cross-listed, all enrollments will be merged into the section listed first alphabetically.
