  • Applied Behavior Analysis (Advanced Certificate)
    • This 15-semester hour program is designed for individuals who would like training in the area of applied behavior analysis or are interested in behavioral disorder counseling. This program also fulfills the education requirement for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). 
  • Childhood Special Education (Advanced Certificate)
    • Designed for individuals who hold initial/professional New York state certification as childhood education classroom teachers, and who seek New York state certification in students with disabilities grades 1-6.
  • Dual Degree: 5 Year Dual Degree program in Psychology and Secondary Special Education Generalist (B.A./M.S.Ed.)
    • The dual-degree Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) major in Psychology and the Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) focuses on preparing candidates as Secondary Special Education Generalist teachers. Students entering Hofstra as incoming freshmen may apply for direct admission to the dual-degree program, and those accepted are automatically admitted to the M.S.Ed. program provided they attain minimum requirements noted in the bulletin. Students may replace up to fifteen semester hours of undergraduate course work for their bachelor's degree with graduate course work.
  • Elementary Special Education (Grades 1 -6) (M.S. Ed. in Inclusive Elementary)
    • Designed for students with no formal course work or teaching experience in childhood, or childhood special education, this dual graduate pre-service program leads to the New York state initial certificate to teach at the childhood level (Grades 1 through 6), and the New York state initial/professional certificate to teach special education at the childhood developmental level (Grades 1 through 6).
  • Early Childhood Special Education (M.S. Ed.)
    • For students with New York State Certification in Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2), or Childhood Education (grades 1-6) to become teachers of young children (birth-grade 2) with disabilities.
    • Upon completion of this program candidates will qualify for initial certification for teaching students with disabilities in early childhood as well as the annotation for teaching students with severe or multiple disabilities in early childhood. This program leads to New York State Initial/Professional Certification in Special Education at the Early Childhood level.
  • Early Childhood Inclusive Special Education (Birth – Grade 2) (M.S. Ed. in Inclusive Early Childhood)
    • For students with no formal course work or teaching experience in early childhood, or early childhood special education.
    • This dual graduate pre-service program leads toward the New York state initial  certification to teach early childhood (Birth-Grade 2), and the New York state initial/professional certificate to teach special education at the early childhood developmental level (Birth-Grade 2). Students can matriculate and complete additional requirements in order to receive the New York State Annotation to Teach Students With Severe or Multiple Disabilities.

  • Early Childhood Intervention, M.S.Ed. in Special Education (M.S.Ed.)
    • For students with New York State Certification in Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2), Childhood Education (grades 1-6), and/or Childhood Special Education (grades 1-6).

  • Early Childhood Special Education (Birth – Grade 2) (Advanced Certificate)
    • This program  is designed for teachers holding New York state certification at the early childhood developmental level (Birth -2nd grade) or New York state special education certification at the childhood developmental level (Grades 1-6). This graduate advanced certificate leads to the New York state professional certification in special education at the early childhood level.
  • Gifted Education (Advanced Certificate)
    • The advanced certificate program for teaching students of high ability/talents is designed for teachers who hold New York State teacher certification or for students completing an education master’s program who seek a concentration in gifted education.
    • This program leads to the New York extension for gifted education for classroom teaching certificates. Special education teachers wishing to teach students with gifts and talents at the preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle or secondary levels may find this advanced certificate necessary. All courses are offered exclusively online.
  • Intervention, M.S.Ed. in Special Education Early Childhood Education (M.S.Ed.)
    • For students with New York State Certification in Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2), Childhood Education (grades 1-6), and/or Childhood Special Education (grades 1-6).
    • This program leads to New York state initial/professional certification in students with disabilities at the early childhood level. This program also fulfills the education requirement for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

  • Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6) and Special Education (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades 1-6) (M.S. Ed.)
    • These dual programs prepare students to meet the educational requirements for certification, literacy (Birth-Grade 6) and students with disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades1-6).. Graduates of this program will be recommended for the following teaching certificates: Classroom teachers with preparation in literacy (Birth to Grade 6) and students with disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades 1-6). Graduates will be prepared for the following teaching positions:
      • Literacy specialists with additional preparation in one-on-one and small group instruction with students with disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades 1-6).
      • Literacy specialists prepared to work collaboratively with classroom teachers in designing and implementing effective literacy instruction in inclusive environments. (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades 1-6).
      • Teachers of students with disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) or (Grades 1-6) with additional preparation in literacy instruction (Birth-Grade 6).
  • Psychology: 5 Year Dual Degree program in Psychology and Secondary Special Education Generalist (B.A./M.S.Ed.)

  • Secondary Special Education (Grades 7 - 12) - Inclusive Secondary  (M.S. Ed.)
    • Designed for students with no formal course work or teaching experience in secondary education or special education at the adolescent development level, this dual graduate pre-service program leads toward the New York state initial certificate to teach adolescent education, grades 7-12 in social studies, mathematics, sciences, English or foreign languages, students with disabilities 7-12 generalist, and extensions in the content areas.
  • Secondary Special Education (Grades 7 – 12) - Secondary Special Education Generalist (M.S. Ed.)
    • The Secondary Special Education Generalist program is designed for individuals who wish to teach students with disabilities on the secondary level in a variety of settings including self-contained classrooms, resource rooms, or in inclusive programs as a consultant teacher or integrated co-teacher. On successful completion of the program, individuals will be recommended for New York state certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities, 7-12, Generalist.
  • Secondary Special Education (Grades 7 – 12) Students With Disabilities Generalist With Extensions in Secondary Education (M.S. Ed.)
    • The Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist with Extensions in Secondary Education program is designed for individuals who wish to teach students with disabilities on the secondary level in a variety of settings including subject-specific special education classes (mathematics, sciences, social studies, English, or languages other than English), in resource rooms or in supportive roles in inclusive programs as a consultant teacher or integrated co-teacher. The content extension does not permit these individuals to perform as the teacher of record for grades 7-12 secondary education general education subject area classrooms.
    • Upon successful completion of the program, individuals will be recommended for New York state initial certification, Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist with appropriate content extensions.
  • Special Education (M.S. Ed.)
    • This program is designed for students with New York state certification in childhood, middle childhood, adolescent education, or literacy, to become teachers of students with disabilities (childhood-adolescence). Students can matriculate and complete additional requirements in order to receive the New York State Annotation to Teach Students with Severe or Multiple Disabilities.
  • Special Education(M.A.) As of Fall 2015, we will no longer be accepting new students into this M.A. program.
    • This program is designed to provide students who enter holding an initial certificate in special education with advanced training in issues and problems of inclusion, transition, and other aspects of PreK-12 education.
    • This program prepares reflective practitioners who are able to translate experience and research literature alike into workable solutions to problems in the public schools.
  • Special Education Assessment and Diagnosis (Advanced Certificate)
    • This program prepares professional personnel to serve as educational evaluators responsible for identifying students in need of special educational services. This program is intended to meet the extended professional needs of teachers certified in elementary, middle and/or secondary education, reading and special education preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle and/or secondary school. This sequence can be used within an M.A. in Special Education or as a post-master’s program.
  • Special Education Early Childhood Intervention (Birth-Grade 2) (M.S.Ed.)
    • For students with New York State Certification in Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2), Childhood Education (grades 1-6), and/or Childhood Special Education (grades 1-6).
    • This program leads to New York state initial/professional certification in students with disabilities at the early childhood level. This program also fulfills the education requirement for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

  • Teaching Students With Severe or Multiple Disabilities (Advanced Certificate)
    • This Advanced Certificate  is designed for teachers who are certified in special education who wish additional pedagogical knowledge, skills, and experiences for Teaching Students with Severe or Multiple Disabilities in preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle and secondary school. This program leads to the New York State Annotation for Teaching Students With Severe or Multiple Disabilities (students may select from one of the two programs listed below).
