Annual Programs

Midnight Run

Every semester, the office hosts a Midnight Run service trip where student volunteers collect and distribute clothing, toiletry kits, and meals to the homeless community of New York City.

The Midnight Run organization is a nonprofit that coordinates over a thousand "runs" throughout the year to offer necessities to those in need. Their goal is not only to provide individuals with these goods, but to create a bond between the housed and the homeless by fostering an environment of awareness, generosity, and compassion.

For more information or to sign up to participate in Midnight Run, visit the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, Room 221 Student Center, or email CommunityOutreach@hofstra.edu.

Pride and Plant

Every year in early spring, students help beautify the community by planting flowers for senior citizens of Hempstead and Uniondale. The flowers are planted in either the front or backyards of community members' homes. No prior gardening experience is needed.

For more information or to sign up to participate in Pride and Plant, visit the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, Room 221 Student Center, or email CommunityOutreach@hofstra.edu.

Shake-A-Rake

Every fall, Hofstra students assist local community members by offering to rake lawns in preparation for the winter. Since the program began in 2010, it has grown to include over 500 volunteers from over 30 student organizations, assisting over 50 households to rake up leaves each year.

Fulton Manor Clothing and Toy Drive

Every holiday season, the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach works with the Hempstead Fulton Manor to make sure that children receive gifts during the holidays. Each participant gives their child one toy and one practical item, such as a scarf, hat, gloves, etc. The gifts are delivered with the help of the Commuting Student Association. All members of the Hofstra community are welcome to participate in this service opportunity.

Mary Brennan Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) Soup Kitchen

Every semester, Hofstra students are encouraged to give the gift of a hot meal to the patrons of the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen. Students will also be assisting with stocking the food pantry and sorting through clothing donations.

The Mary Brennan INN is the largest soup kitchen on Long Island and serves over 62,000 meals annually. The kitchen is open on weekdays and a food pantry is available on the weekend. The Mary Brennan INN does not ask any questions of the patrons, guaranteeing a hot, nutritious, five-course meal to anyone who walks through their doors.

For more information or to sign up to participate at the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen, visit the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, Room 221 Student Center, or email CommunityOutreach@hofstra.edu.
