Hofstra Student Leadership Awards 2019

Nomination form open from January 22- March 14, 2019

Sponsored by Office of Student Leadership and Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs

In 1983 the Hofstra Student Leadership Awards (formerly the Co-Curricular Awards) were established to honor student organizations and individuals who exemplified leadership in the Hofstra community. The Division of Student Affairs hosts this special awards banquet each spring to highlight the achievements of these student leaders.

The Hofstra Student Leadership Awards recognize outstanding students, student organizations and members of the campus community who significantly contribute to the improvement of student life at Hofstra University. The leaders honored with these awards are the true embodiment of Hofstra P.R.I.D.E.

The Division of Student Affairs requests nominations for the Hofstra Student Leadership Awards from the entire Hofstra community: students, faculty and staff. These awards are by online application only.



Award Descriptions

  • Sponsoring Office: Career Center

    Hofstra Undergraduate Intern of the Year
    The Hofstra University Undergraduate Intern of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding student for significant contributions made during an internship pertinent to their career path. Applicants must be current undergraduate students at Hofstra and may be nominated by a faculty member, employer, or themselves for internships completed in the Spring 2018, Summer 2018, or Fall 2018 terms. Applicants will be evaluated not only on their internship experience but also their ability to strongly connect their role to their career aspirations and demonstrate the impact of their work to the mission of their organization.

    Hofstra Graduate Student Staff of the Year
    The Hofstra Graduate Student Staff of the Year Award is presented to a graduate student in an hourly, assistantship, or intern position who has gone above and beyond the basics of their role to make significant contributions to their office while advancing toward their own career goals. Applicants must be current graduate students at Hofstra and may be nominated by their administrative supervisor for positions held during the 2018-19 academic year. Applicants will be evaluated not only on their work experience but also their ability to strongly connect their role to their career aspirations and demonstrate the impact of their work to the mission of their department and Hofstra University.

    Please note that any department at Hofstra may nominate a graduate student staff member for this award; this award is not limited solely to graduate students employed within the Division of Student Affairs.

    Individual Tutor of the Year Award
    The Individual Tutor of the Year Award recognizes a tutor's dedication to helping their peers achieve academic success. The Individual Tutor of Year demonstrates patience and care with all students. They work hard to instill in their students a true appreciation for their subject and a passion for learning.

    Group Tutor of the Year Award
    The Group Tutor of the Year Award recognizes a tutor’s dedication to helping their peers achieve academic success. The Group Tutor of the Year possesses the ability to balance the varying needs of multiple students in a group setting while also building a sense of community. They work hard to promote a better understanding and appreciation of their subject.

  • Sponsoring Office: Center for University Advising

    Leader of the Pack Award
    The Leader of the Pack Award is presented to a student employee in the Center for University Advising who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and attention to detail, has delivered fantastic customer service, and has helped drive and motivate student success.

    Nominations are not solicited for this award, as the Center for University Advising selects the recipient based on performance.

    New Student of the Year Award
    The New Student of the Year Award is awarded to either a first-year or new transfer student who quickly got involved and exemplifies exceptional leadership qualities in co-curricular life at Hofstra University. This award recipient demonstrates the ability to lead others, explore opportunities to expand their horizons, and be involved in campus organizations and campus-wide initiatives that serve both Hofstra University and the greater community.

    Sophomore(s) of the Year
    The Sophomore(s) of the Year Awards are given to students of sophomore standing, as defined by the academic bulletin, who exemplify exceptional leadership qualities in co-curricular life at Hofstra University. These award recipients demonstrate the ability to lead others, explore opportunities to expand horizons, and be involved in campus organizations and campus wide initiatives that serve both Hofstra University and the greater community

    Junior(s) of the Year
    The Junior(s) of the Year Awards are given to students of junior standing, as defined by the academic bulletin, who exemplify exceptional leadership qualities in co-curricular life at Hofstra University. These award recipients demonstrate the ability to lead others, explore opportunities to expand horizons, and be involved in campus organizations and campus-wide initiatives that serve both Hofstra University and the greater community.

    Holly J. Seirup – Senior(s) of the Year Award
    The Dr. Holly J. Seirup Award is given to students of senior standing, as defined by the academic bulletin. Awardees must demonstrate the ability to lead others, explore opportunities to expand horizons, and be involved in campus organizations and campus-wide initiatives that serve Hofstra University and the greater community. This is one of the most prestigious awards that a member of the senior class can receive at Hofstra University as it commemorates Dr. Holly J. Seirup's tireless dedication to and past efforts in enhancing campus life at Hofstra University.

    Bovenaan Award
    The Bovenaan Award was established in the spring of 1953, by the Student Faculty Affairs Committee. The award honors students whose co-curricular activities are characterized by variety and quality, and does not make a distinction within the areas of athletic, social, fraternal, religious, dramatic, musical, or political involvement, except to see that its selected members are active in more than one of these areas.

    One Degree Award
    The One Degree Award is given by the Division of Student Affairs and recognizes a student who has had a positive impact on the campus community through direct involvement, attitude, diligence, leadership, and influence. This award is given to a student whose commitment resulted in an organization or activity attaining a new level of achievement not possible without the student's participation.

    Outstanding Program of the Year
    The Outstanding Program of the Year award is given to an organization for a program they put on that demonstrated remarkable spirit and made a positive difference to the Hofstra University campus. This organization and its members demonstrate collaboration, creativity and diversity in programs as well as the ability to work as a team and show leadership. This organization exemplifies the values of student involvement at Hofstra.

    Advisor of the Year
    The Advisor of the Year is awarded to a dedicated faculty member or administrator that advises a student organization on campus. This professional consistently goes above and beyond in their advisement of individual students and student clubs/organizations; is knowledgeable of Hofstra University's policies, rules and regulations; and demonstrates professionalism, character and exceptional care toward students in the Hofstra community.

  • Sponsoring Office: Fraternity and Sorority Life

    Anita Ellis Endowed Scholarship Award
    The Anita Ellis Endowed Scholarship Award is given to a member of the Fraternity and Sorority community that is actively involved in their chapter and the Fraternity and Sorority community as a whole at Hofstra. Nominees must have a minimum of 2.4 GPA.

    Fraternity & Sorority Spirit Award
    The Fraternity & Sorority Life Spirit Award is given to a chapter who exemplifies the concept of positive interfraternal relationships amongst the Hofstra fraternity and sorority community while succeeding in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and member development. They are always a chapter that is supporting other organizations in their endeavors and recognizing those who are succeeding. Also this chapter is someone who is always there to lend a helping hand or supportive stance when other chapters are in need.

    Fraternity and Sorority Life Program of the Year
    The Fraternity & Sorority Life Program of the Year award is given to an organization that has demonstrated remarkable dedication and made a positive difference to the Hofstra community and beyond during the previous academic year.

    Fraternity & Sorority Life Emerging Leader Award
    The Fraternity & Sorority Life Emerging Leader Award is given to a Greek Life member who was initiated in the previous academic year whose participation and contribution to The fraternity and sorority life profoundly influenced their chapter and Hofstra community at large. The recipient's innovative spirit and dedication helped make significant and lasting improvements to the chapter and/or the community.

    Fraternity & Sorority Life Leaders of the Year Award
    The Fraternity and Sorority Life Leaders of the Year Award recognizes two Greek leaders for their outstanding and continued service to the Greek community; strong academics; significant campus and community participation; strong personal character; and a positive role model. The recipients should be widely known and highly regarded in the Greek community for their lasting contributions.

    Chapter of the Year Award
    The Chapter of the Year Award was created as the highest award a Fraternity or Sorority chapter can receive at Hofstra and as such, represents the ideal chapter. Nominations, as well as Letters with Pride will be considered when selecting the winner for this award.

  • Sponsoring Office: Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion

    Politically/Socially Active Organization of the Year
    The Politically/Socially Active Organization of the Year award is given annually and recognizes a politically/socially active organization that best exemplifies the spirit of social activism, politics and social change through programmatic and community building efforts for both Hofstra and the greater surrounding Long Island community, and exemplifies the true spirit of involvement at Hofstra University.

    Faith-Based Organization of the Year
    The Faith Based Organization of the Year award is given to the organization that adds to the faith-based landscape at Hofstra by providing resources for the Hofstra community as a whole and advocating for a strong involvement in a faith centered life.

    Intercultural Organization of the Year
    The Intercultural Organization of the Year Award must have demonstrated the characteristics of an empowered student organization, inclusivity of all cultural backgrounds and created a safe space for their peers. The outstanding intercultural organization has demonstrated various forms of social justice advocacy as well as programming that enriches other students educationally and socially throughout the year.

    The Hofstra Outstanding Pride Experience (HOPE) Award
    The Hofstra Outstanding Pride Experience Award or HOPE award recognizes a singular event or a series of events that have challenged students to critically think about issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, Socio-Economic Status and Identity. Additionally, the event should have provided a space to positively engage in dialogue and action centered on these topics. This program should have encouraged participation from all students and educated and celebrated the community at large, while highlighting the diverse student experience that is Hofstra University.

    Commitment to the Dream Award
    The Commitment to the Dream Award recognizes an individual receiving that has displayed a commitment to inclusion at Hofstra University. They have contributed to the growth of the institution and have continuously broken down barriers in order to establish engagement with their peers around societal issues.

    Rising Star Award
    The Rising Star Award recipient is a first year or sophomore student who has risen to the occasion and become involved with Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion's mission on campus. They have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, as well as superb teamwork, selflessness and have given of their time to better themselves and their Hofstra community.

    Outstanding Ally of the Year Award
    The Outstanding Ally of the Year Award recognizes a faculty or staff member that has risen above the call of duty. They have sacrificed their time either inside and/or outside of the classroom in order to mentor, educate and advocate for social justice and students at Hofstra University. The winner of this award has demonstrated a commitment to advancing Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion and has been a key component of its success in promoting social justice for the Hofstra community.

    The Globie Award recognizes someone who exemplifies a dedication to furthering the mission and vision of International Student Affairs and expanding the presence of the international community here at Hofstra.

    Good Neighbor Award
    The Good Neighbor Award is presented to students who reside off-campus and develop relationships with their neighbors. They strive to embody the P.R.I.D.E. Principles in the community. These students also educate themselves and other students who live off-campus by demonstrating exemplary leadership, organization, and hospitality.

    Outstanding Commuter of the Year
    The Outstanding Commuter of the Year Award recognizes a junior or senior commuting student leader. This student demonstrates mastery in multitasking in a variety of activities, both inside and outside the Hofstra community.

    Community Service Event of the Year
    The Community Service Event of the Year Award recognizes an event that fosters collaboration and shared giving, displays acts of compassion, and raises awareness for a cause that promotes action and reaction. This award is given to students and clubs who collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs to reinforce service learning and civic empowerment.

    Service Organization of the Year
    The Service Organization of the Year award recognizes an organization that is committed to community involvement and provides consistent contributions through events/activities sponsored or co-sponsored by this organization. This organization exposes students to the art of philanthropy and service learning throughout the activities they plan. This organization exemplifies the spirit of involvement at Hofstra University.

    Orientation Leader of the Year Award
    The Orientation Leader of the year award is bestowed upon the orientation leader who demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the New Student Orientation program and Hofstra community. This orientation leader demonstrated a relentless dedication to welcoming Hofstra's incoming class by creating a warm, welcoming environment, and supported their staff by leading with character, kindness, and continually instilling a sense of pride in the work done.

    New Student Orientation Lasting Impact Award
    The New Student Orientation Lasting Impact Award is given to the orientation staff member whose participation and contributions to the New Student Orientation program positively and profoundly impacted the program, students, and Hofstra community at large. The recipient's innovative spirit and dedication helped make significant and lasting improvements to the program and/or student experience.

    Academic Organization of the Year
    The Academic Organization of the Year award recognizes an organization that is committed to academic excellence and student involvement and provides consistent contributions through events/activities sponsored or co-sponsored by them while working in collaboration with an academic program or interest. This organization exemplifies the spirit of involvement at Hofstra University.

    Graduate Organization of the Year
    The Graduate Organization of the Year award is given annually to recognize the graduate student organization that demonstrated initiative, creativity, and made a meaningful contribution to graduate students, the University, and/or the surrounding community by organizing activities, events, and programs that have had a significant impact on the quality of campus life at Hofstra University.

    The Media Organization of the Year award recognizes an organization that excels in the field of media through promotion, publications and overall excellence. This organization exemplifies the spirit of involvement at Hofstra University.

    The Performance Organization of the Year award recognizes an organization that is committed to the field of performance excellence and leadership through intentional performances throughout the Hofstra community and beyond.     The Pre-Professional Organization of the Year award recognizes an organization that is committed to academic excellence and leadership in their field through intentional interactions and promotion of connections with professional organizations throughout the Hofstra community.     Social/General Interest Organization of the Year
    The Social/General Interest Organization of the Year award is given annually and recognizes a social/general interest organization that has actively contributed over the past academic year to the programmatic or social landscape at Hofstra through intentional programs and experiences and exemplifies the true spirit of involvement at Hofstra University.

    Access Mentor of the Year
    This award recognizes the access mentor who encourages and promotes Hofstra's long standing commitment to equality and access. This mentor offers disability related support, education and resources to new Hofstra students.

    This award acknowledges a commuter mentor who went above and beyond their duty to ensure that new commuters are comfortable at school and learn to call Hofstra home.

    This award recognizes a diversity peer mentor who embodies the PRIDE Values, as well as supports & stands in solidarity with those who are feeling marginalized or underrepresented as they transition into Hofstra.

    This award acknowledges a global mentor who serves as an intercultural liaison while adding tremendous value to the international student experience.

    PRISM Mentor of the Year
    This award recognizes a PRISM mentor who went above and beyond to serve as a role model, advocate and supporter for our LGBTQ+ students.

    Transfer Mentor Award
    This award acknowledges a transfer mentor who offers peer guidance, social support and assists in all areas of a transfer students transition to life at Hofstra.

    Club Sport Athlete of the Year
    This award is given to two athletes who have consistently demonstrated outstanding athletic ability, sportsmanship, leadership, and dedication to their club and respective sport.

    Most Improved Club Sport of the Year
    The Most Improved Club Sport of the Year award is given to a club who demonstrated marked improvement in their operations, fundraising, membership, and competitive achievements. This award is a recognition of a club's turnaround and commitment to excellence.

    Outstanding Intramural Sportsmanship Award
    The Outstanding Intramural Sportsmanship Award is given out each year to honor a group of intramural participants that have demonstrated excellent sportsmanship while setting a positive example for their team and all participants during intramural competition.

    Spirit Support Student Leader of the Year Award
    The Spirit Support Student Leader of the Year Award is given to the student leader that displayed their Hofstra Pride by excelling in their academic pursuits, motivating spirit support members, and contributing their time and energy (both on and off campus) at athletic and special events.

    Club Sport of the Year
    The Club Sport of the Year award is given to a club who exemplified the true spirit of athleticism and teamwork both on and off the field. This club demonstrated achievement in the areas of membership involvement, leadership opportunities, community service, campus visibility and athletic performance.

    Club Sport Leader of the Year
    The Club Sport Leader of the Year award is given to a club leader who has proven to be an exceptional leader by making significant contributions to their club on and off the field. They have demonstrated impressive leadership skills and served the members of their organization well.

    Residential Staff Member of the Year
    The Residential Student Staff Member of the Year Award is given to the Resident Assistant who shows the greatest dedication to their staff and to their residential community.

    Residence Council of the Year Award
    The Residence Council of the Year Award is given to the individual building or area Residence Council that has demonstrated the greatest growth and/or commitment to their resident student population.

    Residence Life Program of the Year Award
    The Residence Life Program of the Year Award recognizes a Resident Assistant(s) that has gone above and beyond in building community through programming. Programs can be centered around educational, social or community development.

    Unsung Hero
    The Unsung Hero award goes to the student staff member who provides the greatest contribution to his staff team with the least amount of fanfare. Never drawing attention to themselves, their contributions are nonetheless instrumental to their staff's success.

    Residential Student of the Year Award
    The Residential Student of the Year Award goes to the resident who has had the most positive impact on the residential community, in addition to making strides to enhance life on campus either by their participation or through initiatives that have improved the quality of the community as a whole.

    Delta Alpha Pi
    Hofstra's Student Access Services recognizes the inductees of The Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society for their academic accomplishments and interest in disability advocacy.

    Nominations are not solicited for this award, as Student Access Services selects the recipient based on the criteria listed above.

    Most Accomplished SGA-Recognized Club
    Hofstra University’s Student Government Association acknowledges an SGA-recognized club or organization for exceeding the expectation to which clubs and organizations are held. This award characterizes an organization that has increased campus engagement, established a positive presence and reputation, has followed Hofstra policies, and has enhanced the experience of Hofstra’s student population. We are proud to give this award to a club or organization that has truly made Hofstra University a better place .

    Most Inspiring Student Leader
    While there are many student leaders on campus who deserve recognition for their involvement, this award goes to a student who exemplifies what it means to be a student leader. These qualities include inspiring peers to work harder, engaging others in the Hofstra community, and advocating for change. The most inspiring student leader is one whom students regard as among the most influential students this university has seen. The Student Government Association is proud to give this award to a student who will leave a legacy at Hofstra for years to come.
