Welcome Week 2018

Welcome Week 2018 is Thursday, August 30 to Monday, September 3, 2018

Hofstra University's Welcome Week is a five-day schedule of events that is designed to introduce you to the Hofstra campus, the rigor of academic life, our rich culture and traditions, on-campus resources, and the exciting diversity of Hofstra and the community around us. You will have the opportunity to participate in academic, social, athletic and community events as well as partake in trips to New York City and the surrounding Long Island Community. We have planned an exciting week filled with programs and activities that will help you get better acquainted with Hofstra's campus and become an engaged and involved student.

You and thousands of other students who call Hofstra their home can now gain access to campus resources, over 200 student clubs and organizations, and the many social, cultural and career opportunities of the New York metropolitan area.

Check In

This is your first stop when you get to campus for Welcome Week 2018. Please head to the Intramural Fields located on the north side of campus for check in on Thursday, August 30th. Here you will receive your Hofstra ID card, class shirt, and other important information regarding the Welcome Week program.

Residential students begin check in at 8:00 a.m (Please check your Pride email for your specific move in time in your housing letter from reslife[at]hofstra.edu)

Commuting students check in at 12:00 p.m.

Welcome Convocation

The first scheduled event after check-in for all students and family members is the Welcome Convocation at 2:45pm in the David S. Mack Arena. All students should plan to be present at this event to kick off Welcome Week 2018.

New Student Celebration* – 8pm – 9:30pm

Provost Welcome* – 10am – 10:15am
Common Reading Book Discussion* – 10:15am – 11:45am
Class of 2022 Photo – 11:45am – 12pm
School Receptions* – 1pm – 2pm
Various Workshops and Info Sessions – 2pm – 4:45pm
Honors College BBQ – 4:30-6:30pm ( Required for Honors College Students)
Emergency Management* – 8:15pm – 9:30pm
VIP Shopping Event & Fashion Show at the Bookstore, Boardwalk Games & Dance Party – 9:30pm – 12am 

Saturday September 1, 2018
Explore Next Door Trips (Off Campus in NYC) – various times throughout the day
Social Programs and Info Sessions with Acappella groups on campus & Greek life – 12pm – 3pm
Alcohol Education Programming* - either 5pm – 6pm show or 9-10pm show (students will sign up on August 30 for either workshop time slot)
Honors Aims of Education Address – 6:30pm – 8:30pm (required for Honors College Students)
Karaoke – 10pm – 12am

Sunday September 2, 2018
Explore Next Door Trips (Off Campus in NYC) – various times throughout the day
Social programs on campus – Bingo, Arts & Crafts, Pool Party – 11am – 4:30pm
Zero Shades of Gray - Title IX Programming* - either 5pm-6pm show or 9-10pm show (students will sign up on August 30 for either workshop time slot)
Meet the Greeks – 6pm – 8pm
Late Night Movie: Avengers Infinity War – 9:30pm – 12am

Monday September 3, 2018
Club Carnival – 1pm – 3pm
Tour of Academic Buildings – 3pm-5pm
Trip to Target – 5pm-9pm

Sign Up for the Explore Next Door Trips

All new undergraduate students are eligible to register for ONE of our Explore Next Door (END) Trips occurring on Saturday, September 1stand Sunday, September 2nd. Check out the chart below for trips being offered (please note that trips are subject to change/be added):

Explore Next Door Trips are a great way to experience New York City in a guided tour with a Hofstra staff member and student leader.  Our trips include fun activities like food tours, service trips, museum admission, and Broadway shows!  END Trip registration begins on the first day of welcome week (August 30th) at 1:00 p.m. and closes on the following day (August 31st) at 9:00 a.m.  Our END trips have a limited number of spaces and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. You may access the sign up page through your Hofstra Portal. *Please note that you will not be able to access the sign up form until it goes live at 1:00pm on 8/30/18.

How to register for an END Trip using the Hofstra Portal
Go to my.hofstra.edu
Log in using your 700 number and password
Click on the ‘My Apps’ icon on the upper right hand corner (it looks like a grid)
Click on ‘END Trip Sign Ups’ icon inside the App menu

***please be advised that you are only confirmed for an END Trip if you receive a confirmation email***

Also, when signing up for an END trip, please take into consideration the departure and return time of your chosen trip and make sure that these times do not conflict with on campus programs you would like to attend or the mandatory speaker sessions you select.  All expenses for travel and admission are included for the trip.

Food and souvenir purchases are not included.  If a trip you would like to attend closes before you are able to sign up for it, you may go to the David S. Mack Sports Arena on the day of the trip in case a spot opens up.
