Mission Statement

Mathematics is distinguished from other disciplines both by its abstraction and by its logical rigor. Our primary mission is to develop our students’ ability to think mathematically when framing and answering questions that arise within our discipline and others. Because the practice of mathematics is collaborative, a critical part of this mission is to develop our students’ fluency and precision in expressing their mathematical ideas.

By graduation, undergraduate math majors should have the knowledge and skills to continue their pursuit of mathematics on the graduate level or to be hired in an entry level position in their area of specialization. The bachelor’s degree therefore provides each student a solid foundation in several core branches of mathematics (including calculus, linear algebra, and algebra), and allows them to choose additional branches of mathematics and the sciences appropriate to their interests and goals. Our aim is that each major, regardless of his or her specialization, should develop the sophistication to continue learning and doing mathematics independently.
