Increase your marketability - Consider a Middle School Extension Certificate

  • Generally, students only have to complete two additional courses in order to obtain the advanced certificate in middle childhood education.
  • Students may choose between taking one or both courses in an intensive weeklong format during Summer Session II and/or one course in each of the fall and spring semesters.
  • Class sizes are small and interactive.

Hofstra offers the following Middle Childhood Extension Advanced Certificate Programs:

Middle Childhood Extension, Grades 5 and 6
This advanced certificate program is designed for students – graduate or undergraduate –who have completed or are in the process of completing initial or professional teacher certification in grades 7-12. This program extends certification to include grades 5 and 6.

Middle Childhood Extension, Grades 7-9
This advanced certificate program is designed for students – graduate or undergraduate – who have completed or are in the process of completing initial or professional teacher certification in grades 1-6. This program extends certification to include grades 7-9.

Who should apply?

These programs are designed for students who have completed or are in the process of completing initial or professional teacher certification in one of the approved subjects.

Students who obtain the middle childhood extension certification are stronger candidates to hiring principals and school districts. Most middle schools comprise grades 6 through 8; however, the elementary and secondary education programs do not provide certification in all three of these grades. With a middle childhood extension, students obtain certification in grades K-8 or 5-12. Therefore, program graduates have a distinct advantage over candidates who did not obtain a middle childhood extension.
