The Hofstra University Museum of Art Seeks Community Curators

The Hofstra University Museum of Art's spring 2027 exhibition will feature works from its permanent collection chosen by mentors and mentees at Hofstra University and beyond.

Through their artwork selections, mentors and mentees will showcase their fields, the nature of their working relationships, and how knowledge is transferred. Visitors will learn about exciting projects taking place on Long Island representing a variety of disciplines as told through the Museum's collection.

Interested applicants may span a variety of educational partnerships – teacher/student; professional/apprentice; peer-to-peer; or more informal learning arrangements.

As part of the application process, each team will select five works of art from the Museum’s database that best reflect the nature of their work together. For example, a science professor and student studying particle physics may be drawn to dynamic abstract art works. A pastry chef and their student can select ceramic food bowls. A veterinary professional and their mentee might want to select works that include animals. An environmentalist and their peer can choose from various landscapes from our collection, or any other works that reflect their field, projects, or relationship.

As varied as these examples are, they are all part of the Museum’s 5,200 works of art. The database is available for teams to review online. As art is open to interpretation, applicants may choose literal or abstract representations of their work and relationship.

Applying mentors and mentees should be 18 years of age. Students from the local community applying with their teachers should be at least 14 years old.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026. The application and more information are available to review in the application form.
