Program Description

For close to 30 years, Hofstra has partnered with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to offer an exchange program where our students are provided an opportunity to study at UvA and for their students to study at Hofstra.

The Hofstra Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs awards six full-tuition scholarships to Hofstra students for either a full-year or semester of study at the University of Amsterdam (three of the full-tuition scholarships are reserved for Zarb School of Business students).

Selected students will receive Hofstra credit for all approved courses. All courses are taught in English. Exchange students generally take between 24 EC and 30 EC (a full-time workload for UvA students is 30 EC – European Credits).

Founded on a tradition of highly integrated academics, the University of Amsterdam enjoys a global reputation for cutting-edge research, high quality teaching, and a broad range of degree programs. UvA’s open, tolerant, and international academic tradition dates back to 1632, and continues to be strong today, thanks to their thriving community of independent thinkers. With more than 31,000 students, UvA is considered one of the best research universities in the world. UvA strives for excellence in teaching and research, and are proud to offer you one of the largest selections of English-taught programs in continental Europe.

Level

Most courses are on the bachelor (undergraduate) level. The availability of master (graduate) courses differs per department. Admission for exchange on master-level is done on a case-by-case basis. An exception is the Amsterdam Law School (ALS). Exchange students can only take master's courses at the Amsterdam Law School and do not need a completed bachelor’s degree to attend. However, students do need to have at least two full years of academic background in law.

Departments open to exchange students:

  • Amsterdam University College – Liberal Arts & Sciences
  • Child Development and Education
  • Communication Science
  • Economics and Business
  • Humanities
  • Amsterdam Law School
  • Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics (PPLE College)
  • Psychology
  • Science
  • Interdisciplinary Studies
  • Social Science

(not open: Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate School of Social Science, MSc. Business Studies)

Students are advised to select courses from one academic department at the UvA. In some cases, it is possible to take one or two courses in another department. This can only be arranged on a case-by-case basis and is dependent on the availability of courses.

Eligibility

The program is recommended for Hofstra students who have attained junior status (a minimum of 60 credits), along with a minimum GPA of 3.4.

Interested and eligible students are requested to email the Office of Study Abroad Programs and complete a formal application.

  • The application deadline is in the spring semester prior to the academic year of study in Amsterdam (usually late February).
  • If scholarships remain for the spring semester/semester 2, an announcement to students will be made.
