Global Studies and Geography Major, Emilie Beck, Defends Thesis
The Global Studies and Geography department is pleased to announce that on Thursday, May 3, 2018 Emilie Beck successfully defended her honors thesis titled "Re-contextualizing the War on Terror" where she analyzed the ways in which the Bush administration attempted to legitimize war with Afghanistan and Iraq through a series of manipulations of space. She also examines the dominant discourses used to justify and normalize a state of perpetual warfare for profit. She then counters these discourses with testimonials from civil society organizations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Her Honors Thesis Committee was comprised of Dr. Kari Jensen, Associate Professor of Global Studies and Geography, Dr. Zilkia Janer, Professor of Global Studies and Geography, and Dr. Stefanie Nanes, Professor of Political Science.
Additionally, she received Honorable Mention for her thesis from the Hofstra Library Undergraduate Library Research Award Committee which recognizes excellence in academic research by a graduating senior.
While a student here at Hofstra, she founded a student chapter of Peace Action New York State and worked on the peace fellows program with the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives. She was actively involved in the department as well, working as a student aide and a peer teacher in Human Geography and is a member of Mu Kappa, Hofstra’s chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international geographical honor society.
Congratulations Emilie!
