April 14-16, 1983

The second conference in the Hofstra Cultural Center's Presidential conference series was Harry S. Truman: The Man From Independence, which was held at Hofstra University, April 14-16, 1983. Some of the panels included "Truman and the Recognition of Israel," "Truman and the China Policy," "Truman and the Beginning of the Cold War," "The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb," and "Women in the Truman Era." The conference also featured an exhibition in the David Filderman Gallery on the ninth floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library.

The guest of honor at the conference banquet was Margaret Truman Daniel, Harry Truman's daughter. A special roundtable discussion, "The Fair Deal Revisited" featured officials from the Truman Administration including David H. Stowe, Assistant to President Truman, 1949-1953; Roger W. Tubby, Press Secretary for President Truman; and Leon H. Keyserling, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under President Truman.

Proceedings from the conference were complied into a book, Harry S. Truman : The Man From Independence which was published in 1986 by Greenwood Press. The list price is $72.50.
