Dove Tree or Handkerchief Tree

A bit of a rarity in the garden world, Davidia involucrate is hardy to at least Zone 6 and flowers from mid to late May in the mid-Atlantic states. Native to central China, this handsome tree will attain a height of over 50 feet. It is beautiful in leaf but holds no autumn color. The creamy white flower bracts are its most notable attribute at 6 inches in length. They hang from the branches on the inside of the tree and are likened to dangling handkerchiefs or a flock of white doves.
