Harry Lauder's Walking Stick

Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick (Corylus avellana “contorta”) is one of the most unusual shrubs you will see, situated on either side of the entrance to Brower Hall. This shrub flowers in April, has simple, toothed leaves, and its fruit is edible. The most striking feature of the tree however, as the name implies, is the contorted limbs, growing in a corkscrew manner toward the sky. Individuals working in the art of Ikebana often use the limbs of this tree in their arrangements.
