Seven, a brushed steel sculpture by Tony Milkowski, was created in 1968. Part of a series of twenty-one pieces, it consists of seven -- 4 foot by 4 foot -- brushed steel cubes, which measure 7 feet high by 28 feet long. The massive scale works well in an open environment. The placement of the geometric forms is devised in such a manner as to minimize the tremendous weight of the individual components.
When Seven is examined at close range, one can see that the artist has used unfinished edges similar to a drawn edge in painting. Seven, in its complete form, exhibits Tony Milkowski’s perfect mathematical manipulation as it becomes a new creation from each vantage point and new perspective. From left to right, front to back, light to dark, from day to night, as well as the changing of the seasons, the viewer is treated to the varied and shifting dynamics of the work.
