Philosophy

In the Department of Philosophy at Hofstra University, in Long Island, New York students examine fundamental issues such as the nature of truth, existence, justice, goodness, beauty, and knowledge. Through courses in ancient, modern and contemporary philosophy, students become creative problem solvers who can make sense of complex information in a modern world.  These valuable skills have helped our students pursue successful careers in many fields including business, politics, law, medicine, and the arts, as well as advanced graduate study.

Highlights of the Philosophy program at Hofstra include that:

  • You can take philosophy courses as part of an interdisciplinary program such as technology and public policy, urban ecology, criminology and forensic studies, sustainability, or public affairs.  Pre-health majors can also take philosophy as a concentration.
  • A distinguished faculty of scholars are actively engaged in research and have a broad range of specializations including ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophical studies of mind, language, knowledge, environment, mathematics, law, and science.
  • A popular annual colloquium series features regional and international speakers; recent topics have included “how biology is changing our politics,” “does evil exist?” and “the value of humanism.”
  • Regular “Ask A Philosopher,” “Reasoning Evening,” “Philosophy in Film,” and other discussion events let students and faculty share ideas in an informal setting.
