Tell us about your undergraduate experience at Hofstra in the School of Education, Health and Human Services?

The School of Education at Hofstra provided me with valuable exposure to both education theory and classroom practice. My professors were extremely knowledgeable and helpful, encouraging me to pursue my own passions and providing me with guidance as I developed my own teaching strategies. I found the hands-on aspect of the program to be the most beneficial. I had extensive experience in a wide variety of classroom settings and students of all ages. I was also well prepared for student-teaching. The program's emphasis on personal reflection allowed me to take a great deal away from each and every lesson I taught.

Was there any particular education faculty that mentored you?

Dr. Esther Fusco played a major role in my experience at Hofstra. I took her class as an Honor's level class which allowed me to meet with her one-on-one. Her incredible experience and knowledge base was a tremendous resource for me in my own learning. Dr. Fusco also got me involved in ASCD, a professional education organization.

Tell us about your student-teaching experience.

I completed my student-teaching in the Spring of 2009 in the Herricks Union Free School District. I loved my placement and had amazing cooperating teachers in both my third and fifth grade classrooms. I was able to apply everything I had learned and truly understand what it feels like to design and implement a daily curriculum. It was not until this experience that understood the full demands of the classroom- the challenge was exciting!

Why do you want to be an elementary science teacher?

My short-term goal is to be an upper elementary classroom teacher. Long term, however, I would like to be involved in science curriculum design at the district level. I love watching children learn in the classroom and find their thinking fascinating.

What was your experience like as a Pride Guide in Admissions?

Working as a pride guide was such a fun experience. I love sharing my Hofstra story with prospective students and their families.

How was it coming back to your alma mater to speak at the President’s welcome for an open house event?

Speaking at the open house was both exciting and nostalgic. It was amazing to come back and share with others where my Hofstra degree has taken me. It's incredible to look back on my four years at Hofstra and see how much they shaped my personal goals. But being back on campus made me miss being a student there!

Why did you decide to pursue your Masters at Harvard and how has that experience been so far?

The Masters program I am in at Harvard is called Mind, Brain and Education. It really combines both of my bachelors degrees, focusing on education, neuroscience and psychology research to develop best practice in education. I have been able to explore some of my interests more deeply.
