PRIDE AND PURPOSE

What is Pride and Purpose?

"Pride and Purpose" came from the great celebration of our 75th anniversary and our history and traditions. The Hofstra community is one that challenges one another to reach higher … to use our talents and gifts to strengthen ourselves, our community, the University, and the world around us.

It is also a reminder that we, both individually and collectively, serve greater purposes, as students, leaders, scholars, and members of a greater community. We are part of a democratic society, engaged in service, politics, governance, and advocacy.

Pride has many meanings.

Pride and Purpose collage

It reminds us of the lion family — strong independently but even more powerful as a group. The Hofstra Pride is every member of the Hofstra community — students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni — who all contribute to make our campus a great place to live, work, and play. At Hofstra, you can belong to many prides. Your pride may be an athletic team, a student club, a sorority or fraternity, your roommates, your dorm, a study group — anyone you connect with.

Every pride has a purpose, and we discover and strengthen that purpose through our affiliation with Hofstra. In turn, we contribute to Hofstra’s purpose of assisting people to become successful not only in their careers, but also in life — as better leaders, better citizens, better family members, and better friends.

Pride also reminds us of our respect for our history and for our fellow students, faculty, alumni, and community members, as well as our collective effort to advance our alma mater and improve, innovate, and adapt to an ever-changing world.

Pride and Purpose Opportunities

Hofstra University has a longstanding tradition of offering our students educational, co-curricular, and cultural programs that foster a connection between classroom work and extracurricular interests. These opportunities encourage civic engagement among Hofstra’s students and further our dedication and connection to our community. Each year, Hofstra provides hundreds of thought-provoking, innovative, and engaging opportunities that mutually benefit our student community and community members beyond our campus.

Be a part of Hofstra's Pride and Purpose

The resources and advantages of a large university, but the atmosphere of a small liberal arts college.

At Hofstra University, we will know your name!

• Our student-to-faculty ratio is 13 to 1.
• Our average undergraduate class size is 21.
• Professors – not graduate assistants – do the teaching.

You’ll get to know your professors, and they’ll get to know you. Our classes are small to encourage discussion, foster collaboration, and inspire students to explore and expand their horizons.  And our professors are mentors who care deeply about your education, and are committed to helping you find your path in life. With two academic advisors — a professional Student Affairs advisor and a professor who teaches in your major — you are sure to get the help you need to get the most out of your education. And a dedicated Student Financial Services counselor is available from admission to graduation to help you access information about financial aid, billing, and other services.

Yet Hofstra offers the resources of a world-class university: approximately 165 undergraduate program options and 175 graduate program options; schools of engineering, medicine, and law; a diverse undergraduate student body that comes from 50 U.S. states and 73 countries; 21 NCAA Division I sports; more than 220 student clubs and organizations; 35 residence halls; 18 eateries and cafes; a Fall Festival that has featured world-famous performers such as Kesha and Jimmy Fallon; and an alumni network of more than 143,000 who have become leaders in their fields.

Great teaching – the kind that changes students’ lives – is at the heart of the Hofstra experience.

Learn the art of filmmaking from an Emmy Award-winning director. Pursue your passion for writing with a Fulbright Scholar. Discuss economic policy with top business leaders and former Cabinet members. Debate political strategy with a former presidential candidate. Participate in faculty research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Study graphic design with a professor whose work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, or take a drama class with faculty members who run their own successful theater companies. More than 90% of our full-time faculty hold the highest degrees in their respective fields. They are scholars, artists, and scientists who are passionate about their work and dedicated to teaching and training the next generation of leaders – including you.

The opportunities, internships, and resources available in the Big Apple make Hofstra ideally located for a rich experience.

Hofstra University is located in Hempstead, Long Island — just 25 miles east of New York City and only minutes from beautiful beaches, shopping and restaurants, and two international airports.

Hofstra's proximity to New York City gives our students invaluable opportunities for internships, experiential learning, and unique social and educational resources. Visit the Met as part of an Art History class or the NASDAQ as part of a business class. Go into the city on the weekend with friends and explore South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Heights, or Soho. Each semester, hundreds of our students integrate their three-credit internship at places like NBC, the New York Mets, Atlantic Records, KPMG, or the United Nations into their academic schedule.

Each semester, our Explore Next Door program sponsors several free trips to New York City that will make you feel like a native in no time. See Broadway shows, catch a baseball game, tour Central Park by bike, or snack on fried dough at the annual Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy. At Hofstra, students benefit from the adventure, cultural life, and resources of an international metropolis, as well as the traditional campus experience.

Students live, work, and play on Hofstra's 244-acre suburban campus, which is a nationally recognized arboretum with more than 75 outdoor sculptures. Our students attend class in ivy-covered academic buildings that house state-of-the-art research and instructional facilities. Each spring, the Hofstra community looks forward to the thousands of tulips that bloom across campus, a nod to our Dutch heritage, and in the  fall, Hofstra hosts its annual Fall Festival: Alumni, Student, and Family Weekend, which features a concert by pop artists, a carnival, and Fireworks by Grucci. Students take advantage of being close to Jones Beach, Long Beach, and the fabled East End of Long Island. Great shopping, hotels, and restaurants are less than 10 minutes away in Garden City.

Come to campus, sit on one of the beautifully landscaped quads, and study. Then catch the campus shuttle to a nearby Long Island Rail Road station and be in Manhattan in less than an hour. It's all here at Hofstra.

Experiential learning and state-of-the-art facilities. Clubs and internships. Career opportunities. The Hofstra experience will help you learn, grow, and succeed.

Real-world experience — such as an internship, a study abroad program, a fellowship, a co-op program or field research with a distinguished professor — is a critical part of your preparation for life after college. National studies show that employers look very favorably on college graduates who have internships as part of their undergraduate experience. Approximately 75% of our students have had at least one, and very often more than one, internship. And 99% of our 2014-15 graduates are either working, or in graduate school.

Being less than an hour from New York City means our students have access to internships at global giants in every industry – media, finance, theater, and publishing, to name only a few. Hofstra students regularly secure internships at major television and radio networks, Wall Street firms, and in Washington, D.C. And the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science continues to expand its roster of partnerships with top-tier technology firms. Qualified students work on salary for a 6- to 8-month period, which gives them professional experience before they graduate and may lead to full-time job offers from the cooperating companies.

On-campus, students benefit from experiential learning thanks to approximately 200 pre-professional, social, and academic clubs; leadership experiences in both academic and student-driven organizations; state-of-the-art facilities such as the WRHU studio and NewsHub; the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, equipped with 34 Bloomberg Professional terminals; the Hofstra University Museum of Art; and our six theaters. Hofstra also recognizes the value of bringing experiential learning opportunities to campus, most notably by hosting three U.S. presidential debates (2008, 2012, and 2016), as well as the New York state gubernatorial debate in 2010. The University strives to promote civic engagement among our students, to give them opportunities to learn about issues, policies, and the candidates, and to encourage them to participate in the political process.

National rankings and accreditations. Host of three presidential debates. Home to schools of law, medicine, and engineering. The value of a Hofstra degree continues to grow.

With students from 51 U.S. states and territories and 80 countries, the value of a Hofstra degree is recognized across the country and around the globe. Adding to its global reach, Hofstra launched a dual-degree program with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China, allowing students to earn a BBA from Hofstra and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Dongbei University. Hofstra is the only private university on Long Island recognized by every major college ranking, including The Princeton Review's Best Colleges, Fiske Guide, Colleges of Distinction, and U.S. News and World Report's National Universities, and is one of only three New York regional universities with colleges of law, medicine, and engineering. Hofstra became the first university to ever host three consecutive U.S. presidential debates, the most recent between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on September 26, 2016. Hofstra also hosted debates in 2008 and 2012.

In the last decade, the academic qualifications of our entering first-year classes have risen (more than 100 point rise in SAT scores, for example). Finally, the faculty and academic units ensure that our programs meet the test of accreditation. Hofstra holds 29 academic accreditations (33 total) through nationally recognized professional and academic organizations, in disciplines such as engineering, communications, business, and the sciences.

Hofstra has a commitment to service, to engagement, to the community and world around us … with the individual student journey honored above all else.

Hofstra students, faculty, and other members of our community are dedicated to social and professional service; to the advancement of their academic disciplines and fields; to shared responsibility and decision-making for our university; and to service to Hofstra University, as well as our local, national, and international communities. As our mission statement says, “Hofstra is a private institution whose primary mission is to provide a quality education to its students in an environment that encourages, nurtures, and supports learning through the free and open exchange of ideas, for the betterment of humankind. Hofstra University is fully committed to academic freedom and to the transmission, advancement, and preservation of knowledge for its own academic community and for the community at large. …”

At Hofstra University, the individual student’s academic and personal journey is honored above all else. Your future is full of hope and possibilities. The Hofstra experience allows you to imagine, design, and create both the journey and the destination.
