JODIE ABELSON
Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies

Sophomore School of Communication student Jodie Abelson combines her two passions, education and speech communication, while taking full advantage of all that Hofstra and the School of Communication has to offer. Jodie is a double Elementary Education and Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies major who had always wanted to teach and developed her passion for speech communication after enrolling in an Oral Communication course in fall 2008.

Why Hofstra?

I chose Hofstra University for its fine reputation, proximity to home, and beautiful campus. Also, Hofstra's accreditations appealed to me, especially for the School of Education and the School of Communication. As soon as I stepped onto the campus, I knew this was the only place for me! There was a feeling that began to stir inside of me that I had not felt on any college campus. I was able to envision myself walking through the academic side going to class.

What made you choose to be a double major and why Speech Communication and Education?

Being an Elementary Education major, I had to choose another area to major in. In the second semester of my freshman year, I took an oral communication class. I absolutely fell in love with the study of Speech Communications, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies. The idea of learning how to improve my speaking captivated my interest. Learning about the study and history of speech piqued my curiosity. Before this course, I never thought about the way I delivered a speech. With the goal of becoming a teacher, I knew this area of study was a necessity. How was I ever going to be an influential, interesting, and memorable teacher if I could not speak to the best of my ability?

How do you think your experiences at Hofstra in both programs will help you in your future professional experiences?

I have found that in both programs the professors are extremely helpful, accommodating, and willing to go the extra yard to ensure that a student will succeed. They are dedicated and approachable. I have been fortunate enough to experience professors that I hope to emulate one day as a teacher myself. My professors have made me aware of the qualities that can make me a better teacher.

What do you enjoy most about Speech Communication?

In the Speech department, I have enjoyed the experience of learning how to give effective speeches. As a result of the nurturing critiques and encouragement from my professors and peers, the butterflies in my stomach have dissipated. I now look forward to getting up in front of the class to speak.

What was the best advice you have received from a professor so far?

The best advice I have received from a professor so far is to always believe in myself and never stop reaching for my goals. The only person that will allow me to fail is me, so I must never give up!

What are some of your future career goals?

My future career goal is to impact the lives future generations in the most rewarding, honorable way, by becoming an elementary teacher. I hope to teach on Long Island. My favorite quote, by Christa McAuliffe, has always been, "I touch the future. I teach." Also, I want to ensure that our future generations speak correctly and to the best of their ability!

What are some of your best memories while attending Hofstra?

My best memories thus far have been meeting people that I know will be life-long friends. Also, connecting with professors on both a professional and personal level has been an enjoyable experience. Being given the opportunity to take trips and see Broadway shows in New York City with friends and faculty has been memorable.

What was your Debate '08 student experience like?

Although I wasn't chosen to sit in on the debate, I made the most of all the exciting things to do on campus. Being that this was my first voting experience and having the debate on campus, I found myself actually interested in politics. Hofstra provided the students with countless opportunities to experience the debate in a way that interested us. I found myself on camera, in the audience, on the Chris Matthews Show. This was an experience, along with all my freebies, that I will never forget! It is such an honor to say I attend Hofstra University and Debate '08 will always be associated with my university.

What would your advice be to current students who are looking to double major or trying to decide between two passions?

I would tell the student to, without a doubt, pursue both passions. I wake up every day looking forward to all my classes. This is because I have found two areas of interest that excite me! Why not embrace both passions? I know I will never look back and think about what could have been. There will never be a "What if…" in my mind!
