PsyD in School-Community Psychology

Student Admissions, Outcomes, and Other Data

The School–Community Psychology Psy.D. Program (100 s.h.) at Hofstra University is dedicated to training the next generation of compassionate, skilled, and innovative professional psychologists prepared to lead across educational, clinical, and community settings. Our students emerge as change agents—practitioners who not only respond to individual needs but also shape systems of care that foster resilience, inclusion, and well-being. We pride ourselves on fostering a vibrant, inclusive learning community that values diversity among students, faculty, and the populations we serve.

Rooted in a strong foundation of psychological science and guided by the values of equity, diversity, and social responsibility, the program blends rigorous academic training with rich clinical experience. We are proud to be accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) as a doctoral program in Health Service Psychology with a specialty in School Psychology, and approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Our curriculum reflects the highest professional standards, ensuring that every graduate demonstrates competence across the full spectrum of practice—from assessment, intervention, and consultation to prevention, program evaluation, and systems-level leadership.

A Distinctive Model of Integrated Practice

Children’s mental health and educational success depend on more than what happens within classroom walls. Increasingly, schools, families, and community agencies function as an interdependent network of care—and effective psychologists must be equipped to navigate and lead within that network.

At Hofstra, we train practitioners who understand that schools are not islands. Our program emphasizes the seamless coordination of services between educational and community systems, preparing graduates to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, physicians, social workers, and mental health professionals. Students learn to view every challenge—from trauma to academic underachievement—through an ecological lens that honors the dynamic interplay between individual, family, school, and community contexts. This holistic approach equips them to design interventions that promote resilience, equity, and well-being across systems.

Immersive, Hands-On Training

From the first year onward, students apply their learning in authentic professional environments. They engage in school-based practica, where they develop skills in assessment, consultation, and evidence-based intervention; followed by community externships in hospitals, mental health clinics, correctional facilities, and other multidisciplinary settings under the supervision of licensed psychologists.

This blend of experiences allows students to integrate traditional school psychology competencies—assessment, counseling, crisis response, and prevention program development—with advanced skills in systems consultation, cross-agency collaboration, and culturally responsive service delivery. Our training model ensures that graduates are broadly masterful and can move fluidly between schools, hospitals, community agencies, and policy forums.

A Culture of Mentorship, Innovation, and Leadership

The Psy.D. faculty are active scholars and practitioners who bring real-world expertise into every classroom and supervision meeting. Students are supported through individualized mentoring, collaborative research, and participation in Hofstra’s Psychological Evaluation, Research, and Counseling Clinic and our specialty training clinics.

The program fosters a culture of curiosity, ethical reflection, and professional identity formation. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests—whether in trauma-informed practice, multicultural assessment, family systems, prevention science, or community advocacy—and to contribute to the evolving field of psychology through research, program evaluation, and policy engagement.

Empowering Graduates to Lead and Transform Systems

Graduates of the Hofstra Psy.D. program are prepared to assume leadership roles in schools, hospitals, and human service agencies. They function as consultants, clinicians, advocates, and program developers, driving innovation and advancing evidence-based practices that promote positive outcomes for children and families.

Our alumni serve across New York State and beyond, shaping mental health and educational services that are inclusive, collaborative, and grounded in compassion. They are the practitioners who bridge the gap between systems—bringing together schools, communities, and families to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Whether your goal is to serve in a school district, lead in a community mental health center, or influence policy at the systems level, the Hofstra School–Community Psy.D. Program will equip you with the skills, vision, and confidence to make a lasting difference.  Join us—and become a catalyst for positive change in the lives of children, families, and communities.
