Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations
Chair's Office

Hello and welcome to the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, one of the largest academic departments at Hofstra University. Within the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, we're also part of an elite group of academic programs to receive full accreditation from the prestigious Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

We offer bachelor and master of arts degrees in journalism, bachelor and master of arts degrees in public relations, and a bachelor of arts degree in media studies. As you move through our courses and out-of-the-classroom experiences, our award-winning faculty will introduce you to an incredibly wide-ranging number of career and professional options. With an average of two decades of experience in their respective fields, our journalism professors have worked at national newspapers and magazines, broadcast stations, networks, and online media outlets; our public relations faculty have experience in the corporate, nonprofit and agency sectors; and our media studies teachers contribute regularly to scholarly publications and present their research at national and international conferences.

We also specialize in wonderful internship opportunities, taking full advantage of our Long Island roots and proximity to New York City, the media capital of the world. Hofstra interns have a reputation for hard work, competence and motivation, and are in high demand in the New York City-area media landscape. Our students intern for major broadcast and cable news networks, radio stations, magazines and newspapers, top PR firms, sports teams, nonprofit associations, and multinational corporations. Our student clubs and on-campus professional organizations give you the opportunity to develop your skills, learn about the many careers within your areas of interest, and network, network, network.

Explore our site, visit our social media, and come to Hofstra for a closer look. And always feel free to contact us at 516-463-4873 with your questions.
