Welcome to the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, the largest academic department at Hofstra University. Whether you’re interested in pursuing a career in multimedia, broadcast or print journalism, information graphics, public relations, or scholarly research, our programs equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing 21st century media landscape. In fact, the Department is part of an elite group of institutions to receive full accreditation from the prestigious Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication -- one of the youngest departments in the nation at the time to have this recognition.

The Department is housed within The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, home to state-of-the-art facilities including two sound stages and NewsHub, a cutting edge, converged multimedia newsroom that features the latest digital editing software, large plasma screens, cross-media news and information management systems, and high-speed networking capabilities. In addition to coursework in news reporting, producing, ethics, law, and web design, we’re also pleased to present our newly-created Multimedia Journalism Video class in response to the growing industry demand for backpack and multimedia journalists who can not only report and write the news, but also shoot, edit and upload video and sound. As a core class, this ensures that our journalism majors can singlehandedly juggle the skills traditionally required of two people, giving them an attractive edge in the job market. PR students gain expertise in media campaigns, public speaking, and the use of technology and social media, while many in our Media Studies program use their curriculum as the basis for careers in law, education and politics.

With a solid foundation in a strong liberal arts education, students are also taught to question, research and analyze the social, legal, political, historical and economic factors that influence the media and its impact on society by an award-winning faculty with an average of 20 years of professional experience in their respective fields. Our journalism professors have all worked at national newspapers and magazines, broadcast stations and networks or major online media outlets. Our public relations faculty have significant experience in the corporate, nonprofit and community service sectors, while our media studies faculty contribute regularly to scholarly publications and present their research in media analysis at conferences and meetings, nationally and internationally.

As a student in one of our programs, you would have access to some of the most sought-after internships in New York City, only 45 minutes away from our campus, and on Long Island. Our students regularly intern for major broadcast and cable news networks, radio stations, national magazines, top PR firms, sports teams as well as for nonprofit associations and multinational corporations. Hofstra interns, in turn, are in high demand, having earned a collective reputation with these prospective employers as bright, ambitious, hard-working forward thinkers. Additionally, on campus, you can sharpen your skills and express your creativity through a variety of student-run organizations and publications, and attend alumni networking events held throughout the year.

We offer three Bachelor of Arts degrees in our primary areas (Journalism, Media Studies, or Public Relations), as well as Master of Arts degrees in Journalism and Public Relations.
