Issue Alley

Issue Alley will take place from 2 - 5 p.m. in the Main Dining Room of the Student Center and in the East Circle parking lot (near Bill of Rights) on the day of the Debate and is a great opportunity to learn about election-related issues from your peers and from various non-profit organizations. Inside the Student Center, student organizations will present interactive displays about the issues they care most about. You can also document your thoughts about the election and the Debate on our "Express Yourself" wall. Outside, national organizations will have politically-oriented displays in buses that travel across the country with their exhibits. SIRIUS Radio's political comedian, Pete Dominick will be broadcasting live, and there will be other activities for you to join. Come out and participate in all the activities and learn something new!

Embrace the Debate

If you don’t win a “golden ticket” into the Debate Hall, there will be many other ways to get involved in the action. Start by choosing the location where you will watch the debate on Tuesday night. All locations will have snacks, giveaways and prizes! The first 250 students to each location will also get a Debate t-shirt. Each watch party starts at 7 p.m. with the Debate simulcast to follow.

Embrace the Debate: Create
Create will be held in the Netherlands. This space will have interactive, creative activities and games, such as political button making, tote bag and baseball cap decorating, political trivia, and more!

Embrace the Debate: Celebrate
Come by Hofstra USA to celebrate with fellow students. Student a cappella group performances will be followed by an on-air broadcast with students and faculty hosted by SIRIUS radio’s political comedian, Pete Dominick. Student talent will take the stage for an additional hour after the end of the debate simulcast.

Embrace the Debate: Educate
Be educated in the Student Center Theater. Hofstra Senior Presidential Fellows Edward J. Rollins and Howard Dean will answer questions in a town hall forum about the preparation process for presidential debates and how to be an educated viewer. Professor Dalton and guest Diana Carlin, national expert in Presidential debates, will lead the debate watch program leading into the evening’s simulcast.

Embrace the Debate: Commemorate
Commemorate will be in the Main Dining Room of the Student Center. View the “What’s Your Issue?” photo exhibit from Fall Festival or jump in the on-site photo booth! Students can also compete in politically-oriented quizzes and games and can add to the “self-expression” board.

Debate Week – Important Information and Tips

Thursday, October 11 at 10:00 p.m.: East gate entrance at Earle Ovington Boulevard (near the Hofstra Dome) will be closed.

Saturday, October 13: Access to certain parking lots on the north campus will be restricted. Students are encouraged to park near the residence halls. We will provide more detailed information as it becomes available.

Monday, October 15 at 9:00 p.m.: Vehicle gate at the North Oak Street entrance (by Nassau and Suffolk residence halls) will be closed. The main vehicle gate on Hempstead Turnpike and the South vehicle gate on Oak Street (across from the Netherlands) will remain open until Tuesday, October 16 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon). Access will be permitted only with a valid Hofstra vehicle sticker and hangtag and all occupants in the vehicle will need to present a valid Hofstra identification card.

From Tuesday, October 16 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on: No vehicle access to the north campus will be permitted except for emergency and service vehicles.

We encourage residential students with a car to leave your car in place, if possible, beginning October 15 until after October 16.

Guests in the Residence Halls
Beginning Sunday, October 14 at 3:00 p.m. up to and through October 16, 2012, no guests other than other currently registered Hofstra students will be permitted to visit or stay in the residence halls.

Parking Information and Limitations:
Remember, you need a valid 2012-2013 parking permit to park on campus. If you have not already done so, stop by the Public Safety office today to register your vehicle. Hangtags are not transferable.

Hofstra students, faculty and staff who will be using the Hofstra shuttle on Debate Day will be required to show their Hofstra identification when boarding. Please have it available. Local law enforcement has advised that there may be intermittent road closures, which may change the route. Please check the Parking and Traffic Advisories website CLICK HERE for periodic updates.

Pedestrian Access:
On Tuesday October 16, 2012 (Debate Day) pedestrian access to the north campus will be limited to Hofstra faculty, currently registered students, administration, and Debate-credentialed personnel only. A valid Hofstra ID or Debate credential will be required.

Clues for Commuters

With such a monumental event coming to Hofstra, we wanted to make it easy for commuters to access campus. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

THE COMMUTER PARKING LOT on the South Campus will remain dedicated to commuter students during Debate Day/Night. As a reminder, classes are canceled on October 16, which will free up spaces on Debate Day. In addition, all non-Hofstra personnel working at the debate (media and vendors) will be transported from off campus via a shuttle system.  This will help preserve on-campus parking for students, faculty and staff. Don’t let parking deter you from getting involved in the excitement on campus during this historic event. *If Hempstead Turnpike closes down, you’ll want to access South campus from Oak St. and California Ave.

REGISTER YOUR CAR! Updated parking hangtags for the 2012-13 academic year are available through Public Safety. When you register your car at the Information Center, you will be given a hangtag for your rearview mirror, which will allow you to enter campus under the increased security. You will not be able to access campus on the days leading up to and including the day of the Debate without an updated hangtag.

BRING YOUR HOFSTRA ID in order to attend the watch parties. Simulcasts will take place on North Campus and only students are permitted to attend.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT. Activities will go on well after the debate itself is over, so don’t be afraid to ask a friend who lives on campus if you could spend the night! Then you will be in no rush to get home.

Student Events

With the Presidential Debate just days away, events on campus are an exciting place to soak up student enthusiasm and creativity. Why wait until Tuesday the 16th? Here are ways to get involved now, with programs for Hofstra students only!

Capture the Flag! Come to the Fitness Center tomorrow, Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m. to participate in a Debate 2012 themed edition of Capture the Flag! The winning team will receive a Hofstra prize.

The SGA Programming Board will be hosting “Tie-Dye Fest!” Get a one of a kind #HofDebate t-shirt for just $3 and tie-dye it into a patriotic shirt, Saturday, October 13, 1-5 p.m. at HofUSA. FREE PIZZA AND MUSIC! First-come, first-served on the shirts!

Wear your new shirt to HofUSA Saturday night for the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy improv show, starting at 7 p.m. This event is FREE to all Hofstra students.

Get “Vote Ready”

November 6, 2012 is just around the corner! Here are some tips to make sure you are ready to vote.

1. If you are not already registered to vote, the deadline in NY State is Friday, October 12

2. Confirm your voter registration and know where to vote - You should receive information from your local election board indicating your polling place, but you can also access this information online at If you have moved since the primary elections you should contact your board of elections to confirm that you are registered to vote at your new address.

Students registered with their Hofstra address will vote at the California Ave. Elementary School, just south of Hofstra Law School. The Blue Beetle will stop near the polling place on Election Day. Polls in New York are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.

3.Absentee voting - If you are registered to vote somewhere other than Nassau County, request an absentee ballot as soon as possible. The deadline to request absentee ballots differs by state, so request your ballot ASAP to ensure you have time to complete and return yours.  Each state’s deadline information is listed at Don’t delay!

4. Research the candidates - Before casting your ballot, familiarize yourself with all the candidates. Not only will you be voting for the next President of the United States, but members of Congress along with state and local officials. For information on state and local candidates, type your state and "Board of Elections" in any web browser (for example: "New York Board of Elections"). For more information on presidential candidates, visit their campaign web sites.

5. Bring proper documentation States differ in what documentation you must bring with you to vote. All voters should bring a government issued (driver’s license, Passport) photo ID with them to the polling place in case of confusion. First time voters MUST bring a government issued photo ID.

If your name does not appear on the registration rolls when you arrive at the polls, it is your right to cast a provisional ballot. Ask for one and fill it out.

6. VOTE - For ALL U.S. citizens, it is a civic duty to participate in the election process. Also, remind all of your family and friends to vote. Remember, every vote counts!

Myth Busters

With the Debate just days away, the rumors are flying. We're here to help you separate fact, from fiction.

  • "Students will be on lockdown on Debate day and unable to leave their rooms."
    FALSE! Get out there and get involved. Just make sure to have your student ID on you at all times.
  • "Classes are canceled on Debate day."
    TRUE! The University has canceled all classes and encourages you to get involved and have a hands-on educational day by participating in the numerous events being held all day.
  • "I got a ticket to the Debate and will have a chance to ask President Obama/Governor Romney a question!"
    FALSE! A town hall format debate doesn't mean that anyone can ask a question. The people who will ask the questions are selected in advance by the Gallup Organization, and come from all across the country.
  • "If students leave campus on Debate day they won't be able to come back on for the rest of Debate night."

    FALSE! After noon on Tuesday, students will not be able to drive back on to North campus, however, there will be plenty of parking on South Campus as long as you have registered your vehicle and received the new hangtag from Public Safety and you are carrying your valid Hofstra ID as you are walking back on to North Campus on the middle Unispan.
  • "Hempstead Turnpike is shutting down for Debate Day."
    TRUE and FALSE! Periodically throughout the day and evening, Hempstead Turnpike may close down. Any closures will relate to safety and security measures as determined by the Commission on Presidential Debates in consultation with the various law enforcement agencies involved. You will still be able to access South Campus via Front Street and California Ave. and your valid Hofstra ID will get you across the Unispan.

Coffee Talk

Do you want to catch up on Hofstra Debate coverage on Wednesday morning? Come to the Commuter Lounge in the Student Center starting at 7am. We'll supply coffee and bagels for the early risers, turn on the morning shows, and provide the morning paper so you can catch all the media coverage from the night before.

Debate Quest: Scavenger Hunt

Participate in the Debate Quest: Scavenger Hunt. Make a team or do it on your own! The first 50 students to show proof that they completed 15 out of the 25 listed items will win a prize! Bring proof of what you’ve found to 200 Phillips Hall between the hours of noon and 5:00 p.m. on October 17 - 19 to claim your prize!

1. Score a Debate 2012 shirt or other giveaways at a debate simulcast.
2. Find a morning show broadcasting from campus.
3. Ask a question of Howard Dean or Edward Rollins in the SC Theater simulcast.
4. Take a picture in front of at least three Debate 2012 signs around campus.
5. Tie-dye a Debate shirt with SGA on October 13.
6. Attend one of the four simulcast events and “Embrace the Debate” (Netherlands, Student Center Theater, HofUSA, or the Student Center Main Dining Room).
7. Listen to historical speeches during “Democracy in Performance” on October 15.
8. Residents: Have a commuter friend stay with you on Debate night; Commuters: Request an overnight invitation from a friend!
9. Identify yourself as someone who stood up, was selected, and served as a debate volunteer.
10. Get your picture taken for the “What’s Your Issue?” wall.
11. Register to vote! (The NY deadline is October 12).
12. Make a political button in the Netherlands Debate simulcast.
13. Laugh it up with the Upright Citizens’ Brigade on October 13.
14. Participate in Pete Dominick’s live SIRIUS radio broadcast in the HofUSA simulcast.
15. Support your fellow students and learn something new at Issue Alley.
16. Get interviewed by the media, at least once.
