Bio

Dr. Keith Shafritz is Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience. His primary teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in clinical neuropsychology, statistics, introductory neuroscience, and research seminars in clinical psychology and neuroscience.

Dr. Shafritz earned his PhD in Neuroscience from Yale University in 2002 and then spent a year as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine. In 2003, Dr. Shafritz moved to Duke University, where he worked for two years as a Research Associate in Neuroimaging. Prior to coming to Hofstra, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Drew University in Madison, NJ.

Dr. Shafritz’s research interests are in attention, executive function, and emotion. He also studies psychological disorders that involve dysregulation of these processes, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, and Psychosis. Dr. Shafritz's research methods include a combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and classic cognitive measures, such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Go/No-Go Test. A goal of this research is to determine the brain mechanisms underlying behavioral disorders, so that future treatments can be tailored to specifically target affected brain regions, increasing the effectiveness of treatments and reducing side effects.

Dr. Shafritz has published his research findings in journals such as The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Biological Psychiatry, The American Journal of Psychiatry, Brain Imaging & Behavior, and Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry. He is a member of The Society for Neuroscience, AAAS, and Sigma Xi. His research and mentorship programs have been sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Health Resources & Services Administration.
