Bio

Sharon Whitton is professor of teaching, learning and technology and graduate director of mathematics education programs at Hofstra University. She has more than 30 years of experience as a mathematics teacher, chairperson and teacher educator, including public school teaching (grades 7-12). She has chaired the teacher preparation programs at two universities and taught collegiate mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, and educational technology. In New York state, she is permanently certified in the teaching of mathematics (grades 7-12) and elementary education (prek-6), under her former name Sharon Whitton Ayers. For 29 years at Hofstra, she has coordinated numerous projects funded by the National Science Foundation. Her primary role in these projects has been to work with selected school districts of Long Island in facilitating professional development in the pedagogy of integrating mathematics into the science, technology, engineering, and the arts (STEAM) curriculum. She has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and is a recognized expert in the implementation of the STEM curriculum. In 2009, Dr. Whitton was honored by the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association (NCMTA) with the College Mathematics Teacher of the Year Award.

She received her Master's degree from Emory University in Mathematics, and her Doctoral degree (Ph.D) from Georgia State University in Mathematics Education .


Teaching Interests

Her primary interests in teaching are in preparing teachers to make mathematics meaningful and motivating through "enhanced discovery" activities and Information Technologies.

Research Interests

Dr. Whitton has been a coordinator of several NSF grants which focus on cyber-enabled mathematics instruction, student-centered contextual learning, and teaching for understanding.
