Gerda L. Kamberova
Professor of Computer Science
Degrees
PHD, 1992, University of Pennsylvania; MS, 1982, Univ Sofia
Bio
Dr. Kamberova earned a M.S. in Mathematics from Sofia State University St. Kliment Ochridski in Bulgaria and a PhD in Computer Science from The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. She is an alumni of the General Robotics and Active Sensory Perception Laboratory (GRASP Lab) at PENN. Dr. Kamberova's research interests include computer vision, multi-sensor fusion, and decision making under uncertainty. She has written and presented on these topics at conferences sponsored by ACM, IEEE and SIAM, and has co-authored several journal articles and book chapters. Her work on the development of methods for reconstructing 3D scenes and shapes of objects from digital images and in quantifying the geometry of 3D point sets was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (2009-2012) and a research grant from Google (2010). Recent projects include scene understanding from video and a collaborative project with biology researchers studying the genetic basis of human skin evolution. Dr. Kamberova enjoys working with talented high school student, introducing them to research in computer vision. She has advised several semifinalists of the Intel Talent Search Competition. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of the mathematical foundations of Computer Science, algorithms, and visual computing. Dr. Kamberova has served as department chair, 2004-2010, associate chair 2010-2011, and is currently the graduate director. For her achievements and leadership she is a recipient of a Diamond Recognition Award from The Long Island Software Technology Network (ListNet).
