Students interested in joining the University Senate for the 2019-2020 academic year, can submit their information to the University Senate office.

For information on the many areas our committees and sub-committees cover, please refer to our bylaws.

The Student Affairs Committee makes policy recommendations to the University regarding student-related activities and services, and is always looking for members and/or student input! You may email any questions/concerns to the Chair of the committee, David Harb.


Dear Hofstra Students, 

I hope this email finds you safe and well. As the chairperson of the Student Affairs Committee of the University Senate, I understand that it has been a turbulent semester with extensive changes going on across the University due to the ramifications of COVID-19. I want to share an opportunity to get involved in shared governance to have a voice in the changes going on at Hofstra University and advocate for the student population. 

By running for a University Senator position in the 2020-2021 school year, you will have an opportunity to promote initiatives that affect the lives of Hofstra students and provide students with support where it is needed. Student Senators have developed and proposed a policy to limit smoke and tobacco on campus. Additionally, Senators have advocated for improved shuttle services, committed to environmental sustainability, and hosted the 2020 Annual Town Hall to identify student concerns. Your voice, as a Senator, will go further to improve the lives of the student body.

I hope you consider running for a position to improve and serve the Hofstra student body.  If you are interested in running for a Senator position, I encourage you to connect with me to learn more about the rewarding and humbling experience.

Senator of Graduate and Law School Students
  • There are four spots on the University Senate for Undergraduate Students, and one spot for Graduate and Law School Students.

  • University Senate meetings are typically held on the second Monday of each month at 3pm. In addition, elected senators will be appointed to one of the following standing committees: Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee, Graduate Academic Affairs Committee, Planning and Budget Committee, and Student Affairs Committee.  These committees meet once a month, depending on their member's schedules.

  • Eligible students must be nominated by petition of at least 10 voters.
  • (With mandatory or precautionary quarantine order due to COVID-19 in place, petition for nominations may be sent at a later date. Just contact Caroline Schreiner for more information.)
  • Everyone who submits an application will be asked to submit a photo of themselves as well as a short-focused statement (about 5 -7 sentences - written in the first person) via email with emphasis on those activities and ideas which best reflect his/her qualifications by Thursday, April 30. You may request that we use the photo on your Hofstra ID as well.

Elections will be held online through the Hofstra Portal:
for Undergraduate Students: 9am May 4 to 5pm May 5
for Graduate Students and Law Students: 9am May 6 to 5pm May 7
