Our Educational Mission: Provide Pre-Professional Broadcast Training to Qualified Hofstra Students

Our goal is to provide the radio industry with skilled entry-level talent.

Engineering, on-air (news, sports, talk, music personalities), podcasters, multi-media / converged-media / social media content producing, sales / partnership marketing, and management are areas students get training and experience. Students use multi-media studios with industry standard tech (RCS, Comrex, Telos, Wheatstone, TriCaster, LiveStream, etc.) Students converge audio and video creating content for multiple platforms (FM, apps, social media, web and TV). In 2018-19, staff content earned many awards including 1st place national winner best live local newscast from the Society of Professional Journalists.

WRHU student staff meet & learn from industry leaders like Scott Hopeck Division President of iHeart onfrequent visits to broadcast outlets including: iHeart, Entercom, Cox, Cumulus, Emmis, Salem, and others. WRHU student staff attend conferences (NAB, BEA, TALKERS, IBS, and more ) where they hear about industry trends and issues from visionary leaders including Erica Farber and Michael Harrison. Many top tier industry executives (Mike McVay, Mark Chernoff, Heather Cohen and others) visit Hofstra to speak with and inspire students. At WRHU, students get unique opportunities to build professional experience.

2019-20 is the 10th NHL season, students are produced / distributed NY Islanders live game radio broadcasts. Their work airs on ESPN Radio NYC 1050AM or 87.7FM Radio.com “LI News Radio” WRCN FM Long Island, WRHU FM, NHL.com, and Sirius/XM. Students have produced / syndicated over 740 live NHL game broadcasts since 2010.

This is the 4th season students converged play-by-play audio with video for NBA G-league franchise Long Island Nets. For a decade students broadcast play-by-play and commentary for LI Ducks Atlantic League baseball games. For 60 years staff broadcast Hofstra Pride games. WRHU also broadcasts from the Belmont Stakes every year!

An example of student multi-media content skills was Hofstra Votes Live. This multiple hour live election night “radio” broadcast with video from multiple studios plus reporters calling in from campaign headquarters. Content was sent live simultaneously to WRHU FM, LiveStream, WRHU.org, and channel 32 Hofstra TV.

During Presidential election cycles, student at WRHU cover political events alongside pro reporters from news outlets (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc). Students broadcast from radio row at the Republican National Convention, Democratic National Convention, Debates at Hofstra and campaign headquarters of President Elect Donald Trump on election night 2016.

In 2019, WRHU was named the first ever “College Station of the Year” in the NAB Marconi Awards. WRHU was previously named “Non-Commercial Station of the Year” in 2017 in the NAB Marconi awards. WRHU was the first ever “Non-Commercial Station of the Year” in the NAB Marconi Awards in 2014. WRHU has earned three National Association of Broadcasting Marconi awards in the last 5 years! WRHU has earned first place rankings from Princeton Review, a Pinnacle Award "station of the year" by College Media Association, and in 2018 BestColleges.com ranked WRHU #1 college radio station in the nation!
