**Please note: this appointment scheduling process is for current Hofstra students only. Incoming first-year students will meet with their advisor at New Student Orientation for academic advising and class registration!**

How to Register for Courses on the Hofstra Portal

1) Know when your class registration time is!

Registration is based on class standing and each class has a specific day and time that they can begin registering. You can find your registration date and time on the Hofstra University Academic Calendar. Class standing is based on how many credits you’ve already earned entering the current semester, and does not include in-progress courses. You can find your class standing on the top of your Degree Audit under Classification.

• Less than 30 earned semester hours is first-year standing
• 30 earned semester hours or more is sophomore standing
• 60 semester hours or more is junior standing
• 90 semester hours or more is senior standing

2) Review your requirements!

Make sure you know what courses are required for your degree by reviewing your Degree Audit. To access your Degree Audit:

1. Log into the Hofstra Portal
2. Scroll down to the Student Success Center and click on the Degreeworks tile.
3. Pay close attention to your major requirements, distribution requirements and elective requirements.

Consult with your Center for University Advising dean and your faculty advisor on the best courses to prepare for registration.

3) Choose your courses!

There’s so many options to look up courses, course descriptions and availability!

1. Utilize resources such as the Hofstra Bulletin, Hofstra Dynamic Schedule, and the Look Up Classes Feature and Add/Drop feature on the Hofstra Portal.
2. Make sure to have backup courses selected in case your first choices are full!

4) Compare the courses you selected against your Degree Requirements

Utilize the “What If” and “Look Ahead” features on your Degree Audit to see if/how the courses you picked could apply towards your degree! You can also use this tool to see what courses you would need if you were thinking about adding a major or minor. To access the What If feature:

1. Log into your Degree Audit (instructions above)
2. Click “What If” and enter any additional majors, minors or concentrations you may be interested in.
3. Click Look Ahead to enter the subject and number of the courses you’re looking to add and click Process New. Make sure to be entering all three digits of the course number, i.e. WSC 001.

5) Don’t forget and don’t hesitate to reach out!

1. Be sure to check to see if you have any holds on your account in advance of your registration date, whether they are financial or academic. Check by logging into the Hofstra Portal, clicking Student Services, Check Your Registration Status. If you have a financial hold, email Student Financial Services at sfs@hofstra.edu. If you have a registration hold, email your Center for University advisor!
